SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Office 7.0 to Microsoft Office 97 and fail to remove Office 7.0, the existing shortcuts on the Start Menu are updated to point to the Office 97 programs.

CAUSE

The upgrade process does not create new shortcuts for Office 97 in addition to the existing shortcuts for Office 7.0.

NOTE: This behavior is the same for the Professional and Standard editions of Microsoft Office.

RESOLUTION

If you want to create shortcuts on the Start menu for both versions of Microsoft Office, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Move the Office 7.0 shortcuts before you upgrade to Office 97. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, open the following folder

    <Windows folder>\Start Menu\Programs

where <Windows folder> is the folder that contains Microsoft Windows.
  2. On the File menu, point to New and click Folder.
  3. Name the folder "Microsoft Office 7.0" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.
  4. Move all of the Office shortcuts from the location mentioned in step 1, to the folder that you created in step 3.

Method 2

You can create shortcuts for Office 7.0 after you upgrade to Office 97. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, open the following folder

    <Windows folder>\Start Menu\Programs

where <Windows folder> is the folder that contains Microsoft Windows.
  2. On the File menu, point to New and click Folder.
  3. Name the folder "Microsoft Office 7.0" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.
  4. Double-click the Office 7.0 folder.
  5. On the File menu, point to New and click Shortcut.
  6. Use the Create Shortcut wizard to create shortcuts for the Microsoft Office 7.0 programs.

NOTE: If you log on to Windows 95 with a password, you may need to browse to the following location for both methods

   <Windows folder>\Profiles\<username>\Start Menu\Programs

where <Windows folder> is the folder that contains Microsoft Windows.
