SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, if you run a Visual Basic for Applications macro that attempts to add a shadow to a series in a chart, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 0137:3047d3d8.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you attempt to add a shadow to a series in a 3-D Surface chart.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not use a macro to attempt to add a shadow to a series in a 3-D Surface chart. If you do not know with what type of chart you will be working, you may need to modify your macro so that it checks the type of the chart before attempting to add a shadow to a series within the chart.

STATUS

By design, you cannot add a shadow to a series in a 3-D Surface chart in Microsoft Excel.

MORE INFORMATION

The line of Visual Basic code that causes the error to occur is similar to the following:

   ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Shadow = True

In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, you will receive the following error message if you run this line of code when the active chart is a 3-D Surface chart:

   Run-time error '1000':
Series does not have Shadow property
