When you attempt to change the source of a link in Microsoft Excel, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Microsoft Excel 97

Cannot link to the file

Microsoft Excel 7.0

Cannot link to a chart

You may receive either of these error messages if you are trying to change a link to a file that has a name that is longer than 122 characters.

To resolve this problem, shorten the length of the file name to 122 characters or fewer.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
