SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, the order in which files appear in the Window menu, the More Windows dialog box, and the Unhide dialog box is different from earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.

The following table shows the order in which files appear:

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, files are listed in the Window menu and in the More Windows dialog box in the reverse order from the order you opened them. That is, files that you opened more recently will be listed above files that you opened earlier. In versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than 5.0, files are displayed in alphabetical order.

To illustrate this behavior, use the following example:

  1. In Microsoft Excel, create a new workbook (Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0) or a new worksheet (versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than 5.0).
  2. Save the workbook/worksheet as ALPHA.XLS. Do not close the workbook/worksheet.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 four times, saving each new workbook/worksheet as CHARLIE.XLS, ECHO.XLS, DELTA.XLS, and BRAVO.XLS (in that order). When you are finished, you should have five open workbooks or worksheets (depending on your version of Microsoft Excel).
  4. Choose the Window menu.

The workbooks/worksheets will appear in the following order in the Window menu:

Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0 In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel
   -------------------------------------------------------------------
   BRAVO.XLS ALPHA.XLS
   DELTA.XLS BRAVO.XLS
   ECHO.XLS CHARLIE.XLS
   CHARLIE.XLS DELTA.XLS
   ALPHA.XLS ECHO.XLS

Using the above example, if you activate ECHO.XLS and create a new window for it, your Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or 7.0 Window menu displays the worksheets: BRAVO.XLS, DELTA.XLS, ECHO.XLS:1, ECHO.XLS:2, CHARLIE.XLS, and ALPHA.XLS.

Also, in Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0, files are listed in the Unhide dialog box in order of opening. This means that files that you opened first will be listed above more recently opened files. Versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than 5.0 display files in alphabetical order.
