DDE Links Generate [Unknown] Codes in WordPerfect for MS-DOS

Q107680

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When a Word 6.0 for Windows document containing dynamic data exchange (DDE) links is saved as WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS format, [Unknown] codes appear in WordPerfect Reveal Codes at the locations where the begin and end DDE link codes were originally located in Word. These codes should not appear, yet have no adverse affect on the edibility or appearance of the converted document.

CAUSE

DDE links are not a feature of WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS. They are a feature of WordPerfect versions 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows. The WordPerfect converter supplied with Word 6.0 is designed to retain DDE links if a document is saved as WordPerfect 5.x for Windows format and to remove them when saving as WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS format. However, the codes are currently retained when either save option is chosen.

STATUS

Microsoft has identified this as a problem in the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word 6.0. We are researching the problem and will post additional information as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

As indicated above, these codes have no adverse affect on the converted document. However, if you want to remove the codes, you must remove the DDE links in Word prior to conversion to WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS format.
