SYMPTOMS
Word 2.0 for Windows issues the following error messages (in the following order) if you copy only the Word 6.0 for Windows converter (MSWORD6.CNV) to the Word 2.0 program directory and then try to open a Word 6.0 for Windows file:
Cannot find COMPOBJ.DLL
Cannot find STORAGE.DLL
Cannot find OLE2.DLL
Word cannot start the converter MSWORD6.CNV.
Note: The Word 6.0 for Windows converter allows Word version 2.0 for Windows, PowerPoint for Windows, Publisher for Windows, and Works for Windows to read Word 6.0 for Windows files.
CAUSE
Word 6.0 for Windows uses object linking and embedding (OLE) 2.0 for file storage, so several OLE 2.0 files are required for the converter to read Word 6.0 for Windows files. These OLE files are supplied with Word 6.0 for Windows and the Word 6.0 Converter Kit.
Even though these OLE 2.0 files are supplied with the converter, they are not guaranteed to work under Windows 3.0. The converter will not run under Windows 3.0. You must have Windows 3.1.
RESOLUTION
If you don't have Word 6.0 for Windows, order the Word 6.0 Converter Kit. It will automatically install all the necessary files during setup.
If you do have Word 6.0 for Windows, install Word 6.0 for Windows and the Word 6.0 text converter. The Word 6.0 converter and the OLE 2.0 files will be installed.
Before using the Word 6.0 converter in Word 2.0 for Window, first load share with the following parameters. Once you add the following statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, exit any running applications, and restart the system.
share.exe /L:500 /F:5100
SHARE is necessary for use of the Word 6.0 for Windows converter under Windows version 3.1 because Word 6.0 uses the SHARE.EXE program for object linking and embedding (OLE) version 2.0 operations, and the Word 6.0 converter must interpret OLE 2.0 information when converting to and from Word 6.0 file format.
TO OBTAIN THE WORD 6.0 FOR WINDOWS CONVERTER
You can find MSWRD6.EXE, a self-extracting file, on the following services:
- Microsoft's World Wide Web Site on the Internet On the www.microsoft.com home page, click the Support icon. Click Help Files, Service Packs & Other Files, and select the product.
Enter MSWRD6.EXE in the Find File text box, and click Find File. Click to download the file.
- Internet (anonymous FTP)
ftp ftp.microsoft.com
Change to the Softlib/Mslfiles folder.
Get MSWRD6.EXE
