Word 6.0: Bright White Text Patch for International Versions

SYMPTOMS

In graphics mode in Word for MS-DOS, text color is gray or low white on a color display adapter such as VGA or EGA. In previous versions of Word, text color in graphics mode is high (bright) white. By contrast, on monochrome or two-color displays, the text color in graphics mode is still high white, as in earlier versions of Word.

This article contains instructions for modifying international versions of Word so you can change the text color in graphics mode from low white to high white.

Using the BYTEFIX Utility to Modify WORD.EXE

The following procedure uses the BYTEFIX utility to modify WORD.EXE so Word automatically displays text color in graphics mode as high white:

  1. Copy the following files from the Word Setup disk to the Word program directory on your hard disk (for example, C:6DOS).

    Note: If you are using the 360K disk set, WDBF.EX$ is on the Program 1 Disk.

    WDBF.EX$ SETUP.EXE WORD55.INF

  2. Make the drive where your Word program directory resides the current drive.

  3. At the MS-DOS command prompt, change to the Word program directory by typing the following and then pressing ENTER:

    cd <destination>

    where <destination> is the path to your Word program directory. For example, if your Word program directory is called WORD6DOS, type the following command:

    cd 6dos

  4. To decompress the Word BYTEFIX utility, type the following at the MS-DOS command prompt and then press ENTER:

    setup /d wdbf.ex$

  5. To run the BYTEFIX utility, type the commands listed below for the international version that you are patching.

    For example, for the Italian version of Word, type the following at the MS-DOS Prompt. Press ENTER after each line.

    The WORD.EXE file is now patched so the text color in graphics modes is bright white.
