SUMMARY

When you work with a pivot table in Microsoft Excel, the name of the data field does not change when you change the calculation type for that field.

MORE INFORMATION

The data field name in a pivot table defaults to the summary function for that data field. For example, a field called "Sales" that contains numeric data will be given a default name of "Sum of Sales." A field called "Product" that contains text will be given a default name of "Count of Products." This default name will also change with the summary function for that data field. If you change the function you choose in the Summarize By list for "Sales" from Sum to Count, the data field name will change to "Count of Sales."

However, the field name will not change when you change the calculation type for that field. For example, if you change the calculation type for the "Sales" field to "% Of Column," the field name will not change to "Sum of Sales as Percent of Total Sales."

To rename a pivot table data field, use the following appropriate steps:

Microsoft Excel 97

  1. Right-click the cell that contains the data field you want to rename and click Field on the shortcut menu.
  2. Type the new name in the Name box and click OK.

Microsoft Excel 5.0 and 7.0

  1. Select the cell that contains the data field you want to rename.
  2. On the Data menu, click PivotTable Field.
  3. Type the new name in the Name box and click OK.
