The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 5.0

When you use PageMaker’s Place command to import a Word for the Macintosh document, the error “This application has unexpectedly quit” may occur.

This problem may be caused by a Word document that was created using a settings file that shipped with Word 5.0. The problem does not occur with documents created using a Word 5.1 settings file.

Note: The common cause of this problem is using PageMaker’s Word 4 translator with a Word 5.x document. For more information, query on the words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

PageMaker and place and crash

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh version 5.0 This problem was corrected in Word for the Macintosh version 5.1.

To check for and correct this problem follow these steps:

  1. Quit Microsoft Word.
  2. Remove Word Settings (5) from the Preferences folder (in the System folder under System 6) in the System Folder.
  3. Start Word.

Word will create a new settings file called Word Settings (5). As long as the new Word Settings (5) file remains in the Preferences folder (under System 6, in the System folder), files saved from Word will import into PageMaker.
