Easy Open Causes Error Message Opening Word Settings File

SYMPTOM
Double-clicking a Word Settings file generates the following error message:
The document “Word Settings (5)” could not be opened, because the application “Microsoft Word” could not be found. Could not find a translation extension with appropriate translators.
CAUSE
Apple’s “Macintosh Easy Open Setup” version 1.0 CP is installed on the Macintosh. This utility is unaware that Word can open a Settings file.
WORKAROUND
To successfully start Word from a Settings file, turn Easy Open off:
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels.
- Open the Macintosh Easy Open Setup control panel. Select the OFF button (no need to restart the Macintosh) and close the control panel.
You can now start Word by double-clicking a Settings file.
