SYMPTOMS

If you use the Find Record button on the Print Merge toolbar (to search for a record in your mail merge data file), the search fails, and the following error message appears if only the first data record meets the search criteria:

Word has finished searching the database. The search item was not found.

If another record, in addition to the first, also meets the search criteria, Word for Windows finds the first data record.

WORKAROUND

Add a blank record as the first data record in your datafile. This blank record will immediately follow the Heading Record (Row) of your datafile.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word versions listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
