"Word Disk Full" Error Message with Word on a Network

Q104929

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.5, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Word for MS-DOS may display the message "Word disk full" when you save a file to a network drive or when you perform other workstation or server input/output operations.

CAUSE

Your workstation is running MS-DOS version 3.3. It happens most frequently on networks that interact with a UNIX system.

The following is a partial list of networks that experience this problem:

   Network Manufacturer
   ------- ------------

   10-Net 10-Net Communications
   PC-NFS Sun Microsystems, Inc.
   VINES Banyan Systems, Inc.
   StarLAN AT&T

IMPORTANT: The "Word disk full" error message that occurs as described in this article is different from the "Word disk full" error message that displays when there is no disk space available to save a file. To confirm the cause of this error message, you should ensure that sufficient disk space is available to save the current file plus its backup (.BAK) file.

RESOLUTION

If you confirm that the problem is due to your network configuration, you must use the Word ByteFix utility, WDBF.EXE, to patch your Word program file (WORD.EXE).

IMPORTANT: Before you patch WORD.EXE, use the following table to verify that WORD.EXE is the correct file size:

   Word 6.0: 1,003,121 bytes
   Word 5.5: 738,281 bytes

If your WORD.EXE file is a different size, do NOT patch the file using the following instructions. Rerun Setup to obtain a new copy of the WORD.EXE file.

Use the following instructions to patch WORD.EXE:

Word Version 6.0 for MS-DOS

  1. Copy the WDBF.EX$ file from the Word Program disk to the Word 6.0 program directory (the directory where WORD.EXE resides).

NOTE: The Word 6.0 program directory resides either on your local hard drive or on the network server drive.
  2. Copy the SETUP.EXE, SETUP1.EXE, and WORD60.INF files from the Setup disk to the Word 6.0 program directory.
  3. Using SETUP.EXE from the Word 6.0 program directory, decompress the Word BYTEFIX utility with the following command:

    setup /d wdbf.ex$

  4. Run WDBF.EXE to patch the WORD.EXE file located in the Word 6.0 program directory with the following commands:

    WDBF word.exe 880 10 "168 239" WDBF word.exe 4105 230 "3 210" WDBF word.exe 938397 115 "144 144" WDBF word.exe 998345 159 "31 182"

The WORD.EXE file is now patched. Word 6.0 should now be able to perform network workstation or server input/output operations.

Word Version 5.5 or 5.5a for MS-DOS

  1. Copy the WDBF.EXE file from the Setup disk (720K or 1.2 MB format) or the Thesaurus/Sample file disk (360K format) to the Word 5.5 program directory (the directory where WORD.EXE resides).

NOTE: The Word 5.5 program directory resides either on your local hard drive or on the network server drive.
  2. Copy the SETUP.EXE and WORD55.INF files from the Setup disk to the Word 5.5 program directory.
  3. Using SETUP.EXE from the Word 5.5 program directory, decompress the Word BYTEFIX utility with the following command:

    setup /d wdbf.ex$

  4. Run WDBF.EXE to patch the WORD.EXE file located in the Word 5.5 program directory with the following command:

    wdbf word.exe 35562 "144 144"

The WORD.EXE file is now patched. Word 5.5 should now be able to perform network workstation or server input/output operations.

Word Version 5.5b for MS-DOS

  1. Copy the WDBF.EXE file from the Setup disk (720K or 1.2 MB format) or the Thesaurus/Sample file disk (360K disk format) to the Word 5.5 program directory (the directory where WORD.EXE resides).

NOTE: The Word 5.5 program directory resides either on your local hard drive or on the network server drive.
  2. Run WDBF.EXE to patch the WORD.EXE file located in the Word 5.5 program directory with the following command:

    wdbf word.exe 35562 115 "144 144"

The WORD.EXE file is now patched. Word 5.5 should now be able to perform network workstation or server input/output operations.
