TrueType Fonts Print with Vertical Gaps on Dot-Matrix Printers

ID: Q103752

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0

If you print a TrueType font on a dot-matrix printer that does not support the 240 x 144 resolution setting, the TrueType characters may print with vertical gaps in them.

To avoid this incorrect printed output, switch to the 120 x 144 resolution setting.

Microsoft has reproduced this problem using the following printer drivers:

Epson FX-85
IBM Proprinter

You may experience this problem on other dot-matrix printers, such as the Diconix 180si, if the printer emulates one of the printers listed above.
