Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q103019

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Excel sheet, you can embed a sound object such that when you double-click the object, the sound will play. When you embed a sound object by choosing Insert Object from the Edit menu, selecting Sound from Object Type and then choosing OK, the Sound Recorder is displayed. If you then attempt to open a sound file by choosing Open from the File menu, you will receive the following error message:

The Command you have chosen will close the connection of this
embedded object. Update 'sound in {sheet name}' before proceeding?

WORKAROUND

To embed a sound object correctly, do the following after the Sound Recorder is displayed:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Insert File.
  2. Select the sound you want and choose OK.
  3. From the File menu, choose Update.
  4. From the File menu, choose Exit.

You can now double-click the object to hear your sound play.
