PUB2: Changing Orientation Messes Up Special Paper

PUB2: Changing Orientation Messes Up Special Paper

Q102937

-------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you use the Special Paper option with Publisher 2.0 and Windows or
Windows 95, and set a custom page size that is square (such as 8.5 x 8.5),
and then change the page orientation, the display of the special paper is
distorted with a double image. Two depictions of the special paper, one in
portrait and one in landscape, overlap each other.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs because the page size remains the same, so the
page area never redraws.

RESOLUTION
==========

If you force the screen to redraw (by minimizing and maximizing
Publisher, for example) the display returns to normal.

NOTE: To the best of our knowledge, none of the special papers
available from Paper Direct are square. For more information, contact
Paper Direct at (800) 272-7377 or (201) 507-1996.

Steps to Reproduce Problem
--------------------------

1. Create a new blank publication, page size 8.5 x 11, in portrait
   orientation.

2. From the Page menu, choose Special Paper. Select Design Paper -
   PineNotes and choose OK. The special paper appears on the screen.

3. From the Page menu, choose Page Setup. Specify a custom page size
   of 8.5 x 8.5 and choose OK. On the screen, the top and bottom of
   the special paper display are cropped off to fit the page size you
   specified.

4. From the Page menu, choose Page Setup. Change the orientation to
   Landscape, make sure the dimensions are still set to 8.5 x 8.5,
   and choose OK.

The original display of the special paper is not removed. Instead of
replacing it, the new, landscape representation overlaps the original
portrait image.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher version 2.0.
We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
