Workgroups Mail: Mail Could Not Connect to Your Mail Server

PSS ID Number: Q102647 Article last modified on 11-05-1993

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.1

The Microsoft Mail program supplied with Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.1 may display the following error message when trying to load: Mail could not connect to your Mail Server

This error occurs when a share name longer than eight characters is used to share the postoffice directory. NOTE: By default, the postoffice directory is called WGPO and is located in the Windows directory on the postoffice machine. When you set up a postoffice in Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.1, you are informed that for other users to access the postoffice, the postoffice directory must be shared with full access.

To correct this error, change the share name of the postoffice directory to a name with eight or fewer characters. To do this: 1. Open File Manager on the postoffice machine. 2. Select the postoffice directory. 3. From the Disk menu, choose Share As. 4. From the Share Directory menu, change the Share Name entry to a name with eight or fewer characters. (Spaces count as characters.)
