SYMPTOMS

When running Windows NT, you may receive the following message:

Insufficient extended memory to run in standard mode. Increase available extended memory or run in real mode.

CAUSE

This error message indicates DOSX.EXE (which provides DOS Protected Mode Interface [DPMI] services) was unable to allocate extended memory. This problem occurs when all available virtual memory on the machine has already been allocated.

RESOLUTION

Close one or more applications or make more disk space available (so that the size of the paging file can be increased).
