Entry in Numbered or Alphabetized List Increments Incorrectly

Q101249

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you press the BACKSPACE key to back up over an item in a numbered or
alphabetized list and then you retype the item, the preceding number or
letter increments up one. For example, if you have a four-item numbered
list and you delete the fourth entry, the number of the third entry changes
from 3 to 4. The number of this entry will continue to increment up by one
each time you delete and re-create the last entry.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher versions 2.0 and
2.0a. This problem was corrected in Publisher version 3.0 for Windows 95.

WORKAROUND
==========

To correct this problem, do the following:

1. Finish editing or typing the numbered or alphabetized list.

2. Select the list.

3. From the Format menu, choose Indents And Lists.

4. Choose OK.

This should reapply the numbering or alphabetizing format you
originally chose, and the numbers or letters should return to their
correct order.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher versions 2.0 and
2.0a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem
--------------------------

1. In a text frame, type three short lines of text. Press ENTER after
   each line.

2. Select all three lines. From the Format menu, choose Indents And
   Lists. In the Indent Settings area, choose Numbered List. Choose
   OK.

3. The lines you typed should now appear as follows:

   1  a line of text
   2  a line of text
   3  a line of text

4. Position your cursor at the end of the third line of text. Press
   ENTER to create a fourth line. The text should now appear as
   follows:

   1  a line of text
   2  a line of text
   3  a line of text
   4.

5. Either press the BACKSPACE key or choose Undo from the Edit menu.
   This deletes the last entry ("4"). The number of the third entry
   now changes from 3 to 4, as follows:

   1  a line of text
   2  a line of text
   4  a line of text

This number will continue to increment each time you delete and
re-create the last entry.
