Problem Restoring Rebuilt Catalog Files after MS/MW Backup PSS ID Number: Q100576 Article last modified on 09-20-1993 PSS database name: O_MSDOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 6.0

If you try to restore a backup set with a catalog file rebuilt with another version of Microsoft Backup (for example, you create the backup set with Microsoft Backup for Windows and try to restore it with the MS-DOS version), one of the following problems may occur:

  • The system may restart (reboot).
  • The system may stop responding (hang).
  • The error message “Cannot read volume information from diskette” may appear.

To restore a backup with a rebuilt catalog file, you must use the version of Microsoft Backup that you used to create the rebuilt catalog file.

To work around this situation, restore the backup set using the same version of Microsoft Backup that you used to rebuild the catalog file.
