Microsoft has created an Application Note titled "SMARTDrive Version 4.2 Offers More Conservative Disk Caching" (PD0805) that contains version 4.2 of Microsoft SMARTDrive, dated 6/9/93. SMARTDrive version 4.2 is provided as an alternative to SMARTDrive version 4.1 for those customers who want a more conservative disk cache and are willing to accept slower disk-write performance.

Introduction

Microsoft offers SMARTDrive version 4.2 as an alternative to SMARTDrive version 4.1 for those customers who want more conservative disk caching and are willing to accept slower disk-write performance. The enclosed PD0805 disk contains SMARTDrive version 4.2 and SMARTDRV.TXT, which includes installation instructions and parameter descriptions. You can view SMARTDRV.TXT in MS-DOS Editor.

  NOTE: MS-DOS 6 Upgrade will continue to include SMARTDrive version
  4.1.

New Features

SMARTDrive version 4.2 includes the following new features:

  • A default option to write the contents of the write-cache to disk before returning to the MS-DOS command prompt after completing an MS-DOS command or exiting an MS-DOS program or MS-DOS-based application.
  • An /N switch that disables the default "write write-cache contents to disk" option noted above.
  • A new /X switch that disables write-caching for all drives.
