Developer Previews
Public Beta
Apple released to the public, on September 13, 2000, a "preview" version of Mac OS X (internally codenamed Kodiak) in order to gain feedback from users, which cost $29.95. The "PB" as it was known marked the first public availability of the Aqua interface and Apple made many changes to the UI based on customer feedback. Mac OS X Public Beta expired and ceased to function in Spring 2001. However, via some commands in openfirmware on PowerPC macs with open firmware (obviously), the system clock can be altered, allowing the use of it even after Spring 2001.

Cheetah (10.0)
Puma (10.1)
Jaguar (10.2)
Panther (10.3)
Tiger (10.4)
This version of Mac OS X introduced Spotlight, the first search that can integrate into most apps. This is the first version of Mac OSX that supports Intel x86 processors, as well as PowerPC processors.

Leopard (10.5)
This version of Mac OS X introduces a lot of new features, most notably: Time Machine, to find and restore your backups when you need them, or if you just accidentaly deleted a file, and Spaces, Moving your windows into 4 (or more) personalizable spaces. The dock also got a new fuction named "Stacks", which allows an easy way of using files from folder pinned on the dock, as well it got a graphical overhaul. Like Mac OS X 10.4, it could run on PowerPC and Intel processors. It is the last release to run on PowerPC Macs.

Snow Leopard (10.6)
Requirements: Intel Core Duo or newer processor, 1 GB of RAM; latest update is 10.6.8, dropped PowerPC support

Lion (10.7)
A preview of Lion was publicly unveiled at Apple's "Back to the Mac" event on October 20, 2010. On February 24, 2011, the first developer's preview of Lion (11A390) was released to subscribers of Apple's developers program. The latest preview (build 11A459e) was released on May 13, 2011.

In a press release by Apple on May 31st, 2011, an announcement was made that this new release will be unveiled by Steve Jobs on June 6th at the WWDC 2011.

It was scheduled to release on Summer 2011.

This was also the last Mac OS developed before Steve Jobs died.

A Intel Core 2 Duo or newer processor and 2 GB of RAM is required.

This build is one of the earliest of Windows 3.1 (codenamed "Janus") builds, and certainly the earliest one available.

In terms of both, code and functionality, this build is not significantly different from Windows 3.00a, on which it was obviously based, however, it did add support for screensavers and TrueType fonts, among other things.

It was also by the time this build was compiled that Microsoft was starting to replace the old Windows 3.0 icons with newer, 3D style ones for Windows 3.1.

This build still uses the Windows 3.0 boot screen, but says 3.1, instead of 3.0.
Wheatleyhttps://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=User:Wheatley&diff=6720User:Wheatley2013-11-18T17:41:43Z
Wheatley:

Rumours found online indicate Windows Blue is to be a minor update to Windows 8 (possibly offered as a free upgrade). The relation between Windows Blue and Windows 9 is known, but it is possible that 9 will follow Blue as a major update.

Windows Neptune build 5111 is the Developer Release of Neptune and a Milestone 2 build.

It is the only build of Neptune to have leaked.

Installation
The copy available on the BetaArchive FTP server is not bootable, but can be installed using a Windows 98 boot disk, navigating to the i386 directory and typing winnt /b. (the /b option skips making boot floppies). Upgrading from Windows 98 is also possible.

Another way of booting Neptune is to add the boot sector, using the same boot sector available on the Windows 2000 disc, or by using Windows 2000 boot floppies. Another copy is available on the internet and it's bootable, de-timebombed and doesn't require a key. It is currently unknown which copy is closer to the original, but they're definitely not the original copy distributed to private testers.

The explorer in Neptune is often quoted as being a problem in Neptune, and is blamed for the slow startup on the first boot. The reason for the apparent hanging at first boot, is that a broken still image service is trying to startup, before explorer is loaded. Fixing or otherwise stopping the service from running should fix the slow startup.

Setup Upgrade Bug
Inserting a Windows Neptune disc into a Windows XP computer will show a message saying "This CD-ROM contains a newer version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Would you like to install Neptune?" Same happens when you insert the disc into an already installed Neptune.

This might be because Windows Neptune's version is 5.50.5111, while Windows XP's version is 5.10.2600.

Key / Timebomb
Most of the leaked ISO images have had their timebombs nulled and don't require a key, however the copy available on the BetaArchive FTP server will accept the following key W7XTC - 2YWFB - K6BPT - GMHMV - B6FDY and/or any Windows 98 / 98SE Retail keys (Not MSDN, OEM or Upgrade). The copy available on the BetaArchive FTP server has a timebomb of 444 days and does not need a specific BIOS date set.

Features
Login Screen
The Login Screen in Neptune is an HTML and JavaScript based UI. The Login Screen files can be found in logonhta.dll. Installing Internet Explorer 6 on this build usually causes the login screen to stop functioning.

The Login screen displays a user picture for each user on the system that can be changed via the User Accounts Panel. Included by default are around 7 or 8 pictures, and you can also set a custom picture.

User Accounts
Neptune introduced 4 types of accounts ranging from Owner to Guest:

* Owner - This type of account is intended for people who can make system-wide changes to the computer. A person with an Owner account can make changes to all Windows accounts that have been created for this computer, such as changing account names, pictures, passwords, and account types.

* Adult - This type of account is intended for people who can make standard changes to the computer, such as installing applications and software.

* Child - This type of account is intended for children whose activity should be monitored and who should be safeguarded against corrupting computer settings and deleting important system files. Restricted accounts have limited access to internet content and can have limited computer time. A person with a child account can only change his or her own account name and picture.

* Guest - This type of account is intended for Guests to use the computer. Guest accounts have restricted access to this computer. Settings, Themes and web browsing history will be erased each time a person with a guest account turns off the computer. Only Documents created by a guest person will be saved.

User Accounts Panel
Another HTML and JavaScript based UI, pretty much an early version of the Windows XP user accounts manager, Interestingly it seams that the wording and layout did not change much even upto the RTM of XP
The source code for the applet is contained in nusrmgr.cpl.

Help Center
The Help Center in this build appears to be a direct copy from an early Windows ME build, as the internal branding and help text often contains references to "Windows Millennium". It is run by MSHTML and uses .htm and .xml files for most of the content, as can be seen in the data folder
C:\WINNT\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System
..

There is an intentionally commented out Windows 2000 Help Link (same help as the Windows 2000 RTM) in the homepage.htm code and the system restore Link points to a missing EXE in the winnt directory.

The database is a .mdb file and can be edited with Microsoft Access (after Whistler 2202, Microsoft switched to a different file format that doesn't allow easy editing); copying the database from early Windows ME builds should add the full range of support topics, however some broken help links will show up.

Bug Reporting
The bug reporting is launched via the "Help And Support Center" and is not linked to on the start menu, like most of the other HTML based apps it appears to be from an early Windows ME build, as much of the branding still says "Windows Millennium".

There are two ways of launching the report a bug, one is via the desktop shortcut "Report a Bug" and the other is to click on the Comments link on the top of every dialogue/window.

Creating a bug report still works creating a cab file in the root of C:, however the reporting servers have been shutdown/re-purposed years ago.
The page code is "bugrep.htm" in the vendor folder.

The following is written at the bottom of Submit form: "Bug Reporting Page Version: 5.00.00.5112". This could be a reference to another build but it is very unlikely it existed due to the fact it is found in build 5111. Simmilar text can be found in Whistler builds.
Help Center Data Update
Using the HCupdate.exe in the binary folder and using the Cabarc.exe from the MS Cab SDK to create a properly configured .cab file allows updates to the Help Center database.

Auto Update
Microsoft Autoupdate in Neptune is hidden away in the C:\WINNT directory named wuauclt.exe (That could stand for Windows Update Auto Update Client). Copied directly from a Windows ME build this application was to form a part of the Automatic Updates

This is another of the HTML applications and the UI code is stored in wuauhtml.dll.

Mars / Mars.exe
An executable with this name can be found in pretty much every leaked Millennium and Neptune build. In early Millennium builds, the icon is a blue lower-case "m" on white background, but that was later changed to a yellow square smiley (";)") with black borders.

Mars.exe interprates commands forwading user input to marscore.dll that loads xml & htm/hta into a windowed shell application giving the web pages the appearance of an actual program

Mars exists in retail Windows XP. The file marscore.dll (called "Mars"core because Mars was it's beta name) has been renamed to pchshell.dll - which is "PC Health Shell". Notice the GUId in the image of XP's pchshell, and the marscore from Neptune.
Next to it, same GUId, same file, same contents, only the Neptune version has an XML validator built into it.

Activity Centers
Activity Centers are single window applications, Written in a combination of HTML and the Win32 API, that facilitate easy ways to complete common tasks, However, by the release of Windows Millennium Beta 1 in the fall of 1999, it was clear that the underlying Activity Center technology wasn't going to be far enough along to provide the needed HTML hooks into the traditional Win32 interface, So plans where scaled back dramaticly, Microsoft axed Photo Center, Gaming Activity Center and the Home Networking Configuration Center before ever releasing them publicly to testers.

Remnants of the Activity Centers where phased out by Millennium Build 2419 and where replaced by other applications.

The Activity Centers main layouts are contained in the "ACCORE.DLL" (Activity Center CORE.DLL) and is used to tie all the activity center resources together via the html layout extracted when the dll is registered.

The Startpage In 5111 was meant to be ran as an Active Desktop Item otherwise it errors when trying to customise the page

Installing Activity Centers
To install the Activity Centers in this build, follow these instructions:

*Put your Neptune installation CD into your CD drive.
*Click Start, Run or press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
*Type in regsvr32 X:\i386\accore.dll (where X:\ is the drive letter of your CD drive) and press Enter.
*Now you can find the files in %WINDIR%\Activity.

You can set the activity centers as a background, as it is probably meant to be, by doing the following:

*Right click the desktop, click properties and go to the Web tab.
*Put a tick in the box with: Show Web content on my Active Desktop.
*Click the "New" button and browse to the activity center's main homepage (%WINDIR%\Activity\Start\StartPage\start.htm).
*Maximize the new screen at the desktop by hovering over the top with your mouse and clicking the second right button.
*Optional: Remove the icons by right clicking in the empty space on the desktop, hovering over "Active Desktop" and clicking "Show Desktop Icons". Then place your mouse over the left border and stretch it as far left as possible or click the third right button.

After many years, Extensive file edits, Lots of research and trial and error, Ex-BA member KenOath was able to fix the Activity Centers as close to what Microsoft intended.

The Music Center evolved into Windows Media Player 7. 4 files that were used in the Music Center became main resource files in WMP7.

Fast Boot
Fast boot appears in the Power Options Control Panel, but is only available if you install Neptune on a FAT formatted partition. On the next reboot Neptune optimizes the boot. Upon investigation of this feature, it appears that after enabling the option for Fast Boot, a sub-directory in the WINNT directory is created, called "boot", and a 2.4MB file is created, called 'bootimg.img'. The file contents appear to be an initial memory snapshot of the boot drivers and kernel. Further investigation is needed to see exactly how the bootloader uses this data., Even with this newly-found information, it is unknown what exactly this process actually does.

Firewall
Neptune also includes a firewall, though it's very limited as there appears to be no settings interface. The only trace of this feature (which later made it's way into the RTM release of Windows XP) is a checkbox on each network connection's property page.

Other Notes
onetouch.exe
This EXE is included on the windows Neptune CD with the title "Neptune Core Setup".
It looked as though it was meant to download the latest Neptune files from a Microsoft server and proceed to install Neptune as an upgrade.

Many of the internal strings point this to being some kind of unattended setup program:

joindom.exe
Interestingly, the file version information points to it being a part of an upgrade setup.

multidsk.exe
Other Neptune SKU'S
Microsoft Anti-trust documents from Neptune era indicate that Neptune was to have not only one, but several editions, namely "Entry-Level", "Standard" and "High-End", which translate into these modern SKUs: "Starter", "Home" and "Professional / Server"

There are also several strings in file USETUP.EXE from Neptune build 5111.1 that clearly mention "Neptune Server", but it is unknown whether Neptune was to have any other editions except Home. These references could be leftovers from Windows 2000, if all "2000" strings were replaced with "Neptune".

(the /b option skips making boot floppies)

Another way of booting Neptune is to add the boot sector, using the same boot sector available on the Windows 2000 disc, or by using Windows 2000 boot floppies. Another copy is available on the internet and it's bootable, de-timebombed and doesn't require a key.

Bugrep.htm contains 2 commented out sections "Direct X Team" & "System Restore Team" Containing extra steps to diagnose issues.

Help Center Data Update
Using the HCupdate.exe in the binary folder and using the Cabarc.exe from the MS Cab SDK to create a properly configured .cab file allows updates to the Help Center database.

Internet Explorer 4/Desktop Update
Windows 98
A sidebar-like object was included with Windows 98 (First Edition). It was HTML based and very different from the one later included with Windows NT 6.X.

This sidebar is not affiliated with any future programs such as the "Windows Sidebar" or "Sideshow" starting with Sideshow and beyond.

Evolution
Sideshow
Before Longhorn, during PDC 2001, Microsoft demonstrated Windows Sideshow, which was to be used alongside Windows 2000, ME, and XP. It was a sidebar where emails could be retreived, people can socialize, weather forecasts can be accessed, and so could traffic updates. One build of this program was released. It does work on Windows 95 and Windows 98 with a special fix, but it works on all operating systems up through Windows 8, but many of the tags don't work due to its old age. Some can be rejuvinated by reentering the code in the test apps located in the program's files.

This program has a bug by turning black when trying to change its appearence in operating systems newer than Windows XP.

This developing product was soon integrated with Longhorn. A video presentation of this program is available on YouTube.

Early Longhorn
The Windows Sidebar was being tested in very early Longhorn builds, even the earliest being 3683. The sidebar began as running side by side in explorer.exe. With an analog clock, and a picture preview pane, it was slightly bare but it's typical for it to be that way in early builds. In build 3706, the taskbar was merged in with the sidebar, but was proved to be unreliable and was removed and put back into its original state. From the 3xxx to the 403x builds, the sidebar appearence was the same as the Plex theme and was automatically transparent in earlier builds without having Desktop Composition Engine running.

Later Longhorn Builds
Microsoft later scrapped the Plex theme and started with a new Slate theme. The sidebar was now black and could be easily turned transparent in Longhorn build 4074 by enabling the MILDesktop registry key. The sidebar did not exist in 64-bit builds, such as:

*Longhorn 4074 x64
*Longhorn 4083 x64

The last Longhorn build to contain the sidebar was Longhorn 4093. It has a glossy touch up of Slate but was mostly broken due to the unstableness of the build.

Omega-13 Reset
The Windows Sidebar is not shown in early reset builds until 5219. Windows Vista build 5219 is the first build after the reset to recieve the sidebar (after it leaked seperatly from the build itself and had given users the ability to download it) after complaints from beta testers. Builds 5048 and 5112 (Pre Beta and Beta) did not recieve a sidebar because Microsoft planned on not implementing it, but after complaints, they decided to recompile it and make it stabler and run it as a seperate application called SIDEBAR.EXE instead of running it with EXPLORER.EXE because that was what was causing memory leaks.

Vista RTM
Windows Vista was released with the sidebar which contained 10 widgets.

During Windows 7 Development
During the develoopment of Windows 7, Microsoft took a different approach. They removed the bar, and let the gadgets on the side now roam "freely" across the desktop without having to be on the actual sidebar. In early builds you could not align them perfectly side by side.

Windows 7 and onward
The black sidebar in Vista has since been removed, but still uses the program name SIDEBAR.EXE. It is now referred to as just "gadgets" because they are free to roam anywhere on the desktop. Windows 8 has the same program yet the Media Player/Center app was removed ever since Microsoft has removed Windows Media Center from its operating system. Since then, the Sidebar has not changed and Microsoft is most likely hindering its further development.

Removal of the Sidebar
The Sidebar was removed completely in Windows 8 after its released. Microsoft released a patch (Fix-It) to remove the sidebar in Windows 7 and Windows Vista as well because of security holes not worth fixing. The sidebar, however, can be installed on Windows 8 via third party installers.

Windows Gadgets no longer avaliable
The development of Windows 8 and the small usage of the sidebar has caused Microsoft to shut down the Windows Desktop Gadget Gallery. You can no longer download or upload gadgets, though it is possible to find gadgets on third party websites.
Wheatleyhttps://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=Windows_Thin_PC&diff=5569Windows Thin PC2013-01-28T19:54:33Z
Wheatley:

The successor to Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC's, Windows Thin PC is based off of Windows 7 (Windows Embedded Standard 7) and includes a thin client that can be used on older computers for personal (not available in retail market) or business users who do not want or do not have the option to upgrade hardware. Only legal way of obtaining Windows Thin PC is Microsoft Software Assurance, which is targeted at enterprise markets. Thin PC uses KMS/Volume license activation

Removed Features
*Windows Search function is disabled by default. This means that explorer windows or the start menu do not have the search bar.

Resource Usage
While Thin PC is targeted for older computers, it really does not play well with very old systems, such as Pentium 2-era systems. For example, Windows Fundamentals For Lecacy PC:S can run on Pentium 1 systems, while Thin PC can not. Thin PC will also not be able to boot with 128 mb ram, while FLP can.
Wheatleyhttps://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=Windows_RT&diff=5568Windows RT2013-01-28T19:36:12Z
Wheatley:

Windows RT is the name of Windows 8 on ARM-based devices and is not to be confused with the Windows Runtime framework present on all builds of Windows 8.

History/Features
Windows RT was initially tested on smartphones with Windows 7 code. Later, Windows RT was shown at CES 2011, running on Intel Atom (x86), Texas Instruments OMAP (ARM), NVidia Tegra (ARM) and Qualcomm Snapdragon (ARM) development hardware.

Microsoft have said all software for Windows RT will be downloaded through the Windows Store and Windows Update. Traditional desktop applications will not be able to run on Windows RT, instead they must be written for the Metro environment. Some exceptions to this restriction are the core Windows applications (i.e. Windows Explorer), Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office 2012, which will come with every production Windows RT device. This restriction has prompted Mozilla and Google to criticize Microsoft for employing anti-competitive actions.

Windows RT will run on the Texas Instruments OMAP, NVidia Tegra and Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM platforms. The devices Windows RT will run on will be certain Microsoft-approved devices; a run-of-the-mill Android tablet will not be able to run Windows RT.

Windows 8 is the upcoming successor of Windows 7. Pictures and information of builds with build numbers in the 765x-77xx range have been leaked, but it is not clear whether they belong to Windows 7's post-RTM or to Windows 8's early development.

A Microsoft employee stated in his blog that Windows 8 will have the NT version number 7.0 and that the OS won't be shipped in a x86 version, but only as x64. However, the April 2011 leaks and PR from Microsoft indicated that the 32-bit Windows would continue and that the Windows 8 kernel version would be 6.2.

As stated by a Microsoft employee, Windows 8 will be "totally different" when it is expected to be released, sometime around 2011 or 2012. Steve Ballmer calls Windows 8 his "riskiest product bet" due to the high success of Windows 7.

At the CES 2011 in January 2011, a computer with an ARM processor was pictured running the "Windows 8" build 6.2.7867 showing that the kernel version had only changed to 6.2, most likely to keep compatibility with old software. It was determined to be an M2 build.

Four builds of Windows 8 in its early Milestone stages have been leaked: 6.1.7850 (M1), 6.2.7927 (M2), 6.2.7955 (M2), 6.2.7959 (Post-M2/Pre-M3), and 6.2.7989 (M3). Rumors show that because of the leaks of 7850, 7955, and 7959, two Microsoft employees were terminated due to leaking confidential software.

Features that Windows 8 has (as of Build 6.2.8250) are:

*Immersive User Interface
*PDF Reader (Store?)(Start Screen)
*Webcam App (Store?)(Start Screen)
*Internet Explorer 10(Desktop)
*Immersive Web Browser(Start Screen)
*Ribbon User Interface in File Explorer
*New and Improved DWM, including Software rendering (no longer based on hardware requirements)
