Windows 2000 (known as Windows NT 5.0 during development), was the last version of the Windows NT line of operating systems which was released for business users only and succeeded Windows NT 4.0. It is still branded with "Based on NT Technology", possibly to prevent confusion with the 9x line (which was also named after the year of release at that time). This was done between Beta 2 and 3 stages, somewhere between builds 1911.1 and 1946.1. Extended support ended in 2010. It is the last version of Windows NT to include NT in its product name.

Editions
Windows 2000 was released in four editions:
* Professional
* Server
* Advanced Server
* Datacenter Server

Professional
It is the client version of Windows 2000. It offers greater security and stability than many of the previous Windows desktop operating systems. It supports up to two processors and can address up to 4 GB of RAM. The system requirements are a Pentium processor (or equivalent) of 133 MHz or greater, at least 32 MB of RAM, 650 MB of hard drive space, and a CD-ROM drive (recommended: Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 2 GB of hard drive space, and CD-ROM drive).

Server
It shares the same user interface with Windows 2000 Professional but contains additional components for the computer to perform server roles and run infrastructure and application software. A significant new component introduced in the server versions is Active Directory, which is an enterprise-wide directory service based on LDAP. Additionally, Microsoft integrated Kerberos network authentication, replacing the often-criticised NTLM authentication system used in previous versions. This also provided a purely transitive-trust relationship between Windows 2000 domains in a forest (a collection of one or more Windows 2000 domains that share a common schema, configuration, and global catalog, being linked with two-way transitive trusts). Furthermore, Windows 2000 introduced a Domain Name Server which allows dynamic registration of IP addresses. Windows Server 2000 supports up to 4 processors, requires 128 MB of RAM and 1 GB hard disk space, however requirements may be higher depending on installed components.

Advanced Server
It is a variant of Windows Server 2000 operating system designed for medium-to-large businesses. It offers clustering infrastructure for high availability and scalability of applications and services, including main memory support of up to 8 gigabytes (GB) on Physical Address Extension (PAE) systems and the ability to do 8-way SMP. It supports TCP/IP load balancing and enhanced two-node server clusters based on the Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) in Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition. Limited number of copies of an IA-64 version, called Windows Advanced Server 2000, Limited Edition were made available via OEMs. System requirements are similar to those of Windows Server 2000 however, they may need to be higher to scale to larger infrastructure.

Datacenter Server
It is a variant of Windows Server 2000 designed for large businesses that move large quantities of confidential or sensitive data frequently via a central server. Like Advanced Server, it supports clustering, failover and load balancing. Its minimum system requirements are normal, but it was designed to be capable of handling advanced, fault-tolerant and scalable hardware—for instance computers with up to 32 CPUs and 64 GBs RAM, with rigorous system testing and qualification, hardware partitioning, coordinated maintenance and change control. A limited number of copies of an IA-64 version of Windows Server 2000, called Windows Datacenter Server 2000 Limited Edition were made available via OEMs. System requirements are similar to those of Windows Advanced Server 2000 however, they may need to be higher to scale to larger infrastructure.

Service Packs
In all, there were four service packs released for Windows 2000. All are considered as abandonware as of 2013.
Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 was released on 15 August 2000.
Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 was released on 16 May 2001.
Service Pack 3
Service Pack 3 was released on 29 August 2002.
Service Pack 4
Service Pack 4 was released on 26 June 2003.
Update Rollup 1
Update Rollup 1 for Service Pack 4 is a collection of hotfixes, mainly for the security-related issues. It is said to contain all the security-related hotfixes and some non-security updates released between SP4 and UR1 for SP4. This rollup has been released instead of Service Pack 5.

Microsoft also planned to release Service Pack 5, but it was canceled and the Update Rollup 1 for Service Pack 4 was released instead.

Self-Host Vote, also know as VoteNow, was an internal application meant for Longhorn developers and was included intermittently in Longhorn. The builds that are leaked and have this application are 4033, 4039, 4042, 4053, 4084 and 4093. The application is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32\ directory and is named VoteNow.exe and is also set to start up with Windows.

On first glance, opening the application does nothing and using Resource Hacker to view anything inside it shows only version info. But upon further investigation it appears to be a rather complex application. 'cl_VoteYourTestBuild' in the executable appears to mean that this application is used for testing builds. 'GetLAB' is used to check 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\BuildLab to check if it's a valid build lab for voting (Lab01, Lab02, Lab03, Lab04, Lab06, Lab07). Interestingly, there's a Lab21. I have no idea what this lab is fo, neither have I heard of it before. If the lab is main, the application stops with 'BadLab'. 'IsLegalVoter' checks the user domain environment variable to see if he is a legal voter: in this case valid user domains are NTDEV, WINDEPLOY, REDMOND, SEGROUP, AFRICA, CORP, EUROPE, MIDDLEEAST, NORTHAMERICA, SOUTHAMERICA, SOUTHPACIFIC, INTERACTIVE, WINGROUP, XRED, XCOPR, WINSE, PHX, and SYS-WINGROUP.

After further investigation in the executable, I found, contains a registry key in HKLM\Software named 'VoteNow' with 'VotedOn' in it. Interestingly, there is also a message saying "User has not voted before" but I am not sure what it means.

After a specified period of time, VoteNow will check everything mentioned before, if correct, will pop up a notification saying "You have been using this Longhorn build for a few hours now. By using the Vote Now button below, you can vote to let us know what you think of it. To learn more, click this text." with two buttons, "Vote Now", and "Later". The notification uses the ThumbsUp.png button found in the system32 folder.

Clicking "Vote Now" in the notification would open up IE and navigate to an internal web page:
http://winweb/selfhost2/?ballot=3&lab=", lAB, "&build=", str"
, in which lAB is the lab returned by GetLAB and str is the value found in the registry as mentioned earlier. As an example, the URL opened after clicking VoteNow's notification in 4033 would be
http://winweb/selfhost2/?ballot=3&lab=main&build=4033.030717
. Clicking "Later" in the notification would reset VoteNow's timer starting at 0. Clicking the notification itself opens another internal web page,
http://longhorn/selfhost/
, which contained more info about voting. While none of these pages work anymore and they haven't been archived anywhere the URLs are still nice to have for informational purposes.

VoteNow.exe's file version is 0.0.0.0.
Creating rules and guidelines
Hi all, I think it's time we introduce some clear rules and guidelines for the wiki, preferably supported by consensus. Please comment on the proposals below. If you think there is another topic to be raised, feel free to add it. X010 (talk) 17:52, 26 March 2019 (GMT)
Build naming system
* each build has its own page and is separated by colons: for example, Windows 10:Build 12345 and Windows 10
* all builds reside in the parent page and is separated by headings
Personally,

* that will lead to fragmentation as there is no clear 'collection' of the builds and one will simply have too many pages with the same 'depth'
* my preference. MediaWiki recognises that it's a subpage and makes some optimisations for that; see mediawikiwiki:Subpages for details.
* that is confusing as not only does it look cluttered, it looks like a namespace, which it isn't.
Build naming system
Currently there is no clear policy on the build naming system. I've seen a few possible options from discussions on Discord and elsewhere:
* current style: each build has its own page with parent in the same depth, no subpages: for example, Windows 10 build 10.0.12345.main_fbl_telemetry_032619-1813 and Windows 10
* each build has its own page and is a subpage of the parent OS: for example, Windows 10/Build 12345 and Windows 10

* that would lead to fragmentation and the main pages will simply be too large

*Technically speaking, Windows Aero is not included in Windows 8. Aero, as defined by Microsoft, "features a translucent glass design with subtle window animations and new window colors."

*Although using Windows Classic does offer performance benefits, why didn't you just add to what was written instead of deleting it?
*Aero is in Windows 8. But not in the exact form we know it from earlier Windows versions. It has been redesigned to better fit Metro. Yes, the glass is gone, but that's because Microsoft wanted to remove it, but transparency is still in the taskbar. Window animations aren't in any way related to Aero, they're rendered by DWM. And, window colors? This is still in Windows 8.

*They kept Windows Classic for the Server family up to Server 2008 R2 as the default theme because of speed and stability. Not because of familiarity...

----
*I mentioned the window animations and colors because they are part of the Windows Aero article. My question for you, is, should a visually distinct third-party theme (for example) be classified as Windows Aero, simply because it is rendered by the Desktop Window Manager? If not, why should a first-party theme be? Directing your attention to the Creating the Windows 8 user experience article, which states the following: "In the end, we decided to bring the desktop closer to the Metro aesthetic, while preserving the compatibility afforded by not changing the size of window chrome, controls, or system UI. We have moved beyond Aero Glass—flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients." and "Aero was designed to help the app’s content to be the center of attention, and for the Windows system UI to recede into the background. This is still relevant today, and while we are moving beyond Aero, we don’t want to lose sight of these goals." Clearly then, to Microsoft, Aero is defined by its characteristics such as translucency, reflections, complex textures, etc.

*Even if Windows Classic was set as the default theme for speed and stability, almost certainly, familiarity was a factor in that decision, as it gives the look and behavior of previous versions. At the time, weren't visual styles (such as Luna) fairly new to Windows?

* When you take a look from the user's side, then it's not Aero. But from the technical side, it is Aero. The theme is still called Aero.

* It's your opinion. I asked few people, and they've said that it's because of speed and less used resources. We really can't talk about familiarity when talking about default theme for Windows Server. For the same reason, Linux server operating systems such as Ubuntu Server don't include X server by default. Again, because of speed and less used resources.
Windows 2.x is the second version of Microsoft Windows, released for PCs and compatibles by Microsoft. This was the first version of Windows to provide support for overlapping windows.

Windows applications
There were some applications that shipped with Windows 2.x. They are:
#Calculator (CALC.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Calculator application
#Calendar (CALENDAR.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Calendar application
#Cardfile (CARDFILE.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Cardfile application
#ClipBook Viewer (CLIPBRD.EXE) – Used for viewing the contents of the Windows clipboard
#Clock (CLOCK.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Clock
#Control Panel (CONTROL.EXE) – Used for configuring Microsoft Windows, managing installed printers, and changing system settings
#CVTPAINT.EXE - Converts files created in Microsoft Paint for Windows 1.0. Required for viewing files under Microsoft Paint for Windows2.
#MS DOS Executive – Used for managing files and executing programs
#Notepad (NOTEPAD.EXE) – Uesd for editing simple MS-DOS text (.TXT) files
#Paint (PAINT.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Paint
#PIF Editor (PIFEDIT.EXE) – Used for changing settings for specific MS-DOS applications
#Reversi (REVERSI.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Reversi
#SPOOLER.EXE – The Microsoft Windows print spooler, required for managing and maintains a queue of documents to be printed, sending them to the printer as soon as the printer is ready
#Terminal (TERMINAL.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Terminal
#Write (WRITE.EXE) – Microsoft Windows Write

As with Windows 1.0, Windows 2.x also included the Control Panel for changing system settings.

Support for new video adapters
New features in Windows 2.0 included support for VGA graphics (first introduced with the IBM PS/2 series of machines) in 640x480, 16 color mode.

Changes in MS-DOS application support
One major change from previous versions of Windows was support for the multitasking and virtual memory features of the Intel 80386 CPU, which was found in an increasing number of machines, most notably the Compaq 386 and compatibles, as well as many models of the IBM PS/2. Previously, MS-DOS applications could only be multitasked cooperatively, though Windows applications were still restricted to cooperative multitasking.

Note: That this was only available under Windows/386 - other versions of Windows were not able to take advantage of the advanced features of the 80386 processor.

Application support
The first Windows versions of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word were designed for Windows 2.x. Third-party developer support for Windows increased substantially with this version with many shipping the Windows Runtime software with their applications, including the same Windows versions of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word mentioned above.

Due to changes in the memory model to allow for protected mode support in Microsoft Windows 3.0, applications designed for Windows 2.1 or previous versions of Windows may not run correctly without modification, and will display an application compatibility warning message if the executable has not been specifically marked for compatibility with Windows 3.0.

Examples of Windows 2.x applications that were officially tested and supported under Microsoft Windows 3.0 are Microsoft Excel (as of version 2.1c) and Microsoft Word.

Expanded Memory (EMS) Support
Expanded memory (EMS) is now supported by Microsoft Windows.

Legal dispute with Apple
On March 17th, 1988, Apple filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and Hewlett Packard(HP), accusing them of violating copyrights Apple held on the Macintosh System Software. Apple claimed the look and feel of the Macintosh operating system, taken as a whole, was protected by copyright and that Windows 2.0 violated this copyright by having the same icons. The judge ruled in favor of Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft in all but ten of the 189 patents that Apple sued for. The exclusive ten could not be copyrighted, as ruled by the judge.
Files like that don’t warrant a whole build page. It might make a decent note for the 5111.1 page, but not a separate page. Just since a file has a version number from a different build doesn’t mean it gets a page, just not enough evidence. If you doubt me, just ask mrpjiey. Neptune (internally at Microsoft also known as NepTune) was planned to become the successor of the Windows 2000 family as well as the first consumer version of Windows under the NT kernel. It was under development in 1999, until it was canceled, along with Odyssey to give way for Whistler, which would be released as Windows XP in 2001. XP included a new login screen, help center and user accounts panel originally envisioned for Neptune. However, Activity Centers were eventually dropped. As stated in confidential Microsoft documents, Neptune was to be released in Q1 2000, planned to have 64-bit edition (referred to as "NT64") for the upcoming Intel Itanium processor, "Solar Coaster" (Unix Services for NT), Internet Explorer 6 (which was also in development at the time) and some Anti-Piracy features. There is evidence that five service packs were planned for Neptune.

A successor called Windows Triton was mistaken as a service pack, but as shown in Antitrust documents, it was actually a successor to Neptune which would bring minor updates and enhancements.
Microsoft Anti-trust documents from Neptune era indicate that Neptune was to have not only one, but several editions, namely "Entry-Level", "Standard" and "High-End", which could translate into these modern SKUs: "Starter", "Home" and "Professional / Server". It is unknown what these editions would actually become, if Neptune was ever released.

There are also several strings in file USETUP.EXE from Neptune build 5111.1 that clearly mention "Neptune Server". These references could be leftovers from Windows 2000, if all "2000" strings were simply replaced with "Neptune" during the rebranding process.
I think it's a better idea if you could upload your screens as stock as possible, i.e, without the custom icons, as they do not come as part of the OS and hence distort an otherwise good image. X010 (talk) 21:51, 26 June 2019 (BST)
:::You could just delete the icons for third party software. There’s no one forcing you, you don’t have to make a new one if you don’t want. I just wouldn’t use it for anything as it might confuse people into thinking said third party software might come with the OS. So just delete the third party icons and we’ll be good. "But by the early summer of 1985, we were still not close to being done, so Steve declared we should release a preliminary release that I dubbed the "Premiere Edition", which we provided to key application vendors, analysts, and members of the press for feedback and in partial fulfillment of Ballmer’s promise to ship the product that summer."
Source:

According to Trower, the memory management code of the operating system needed to be rewritten at a later point in development:

"Then just at the point I was starting to feel more optimistic about wrapping things up the architect of the memory management code told me he found a critical defect in its design and would need to re-write it, basically rendering all testing to date useless. I pleaded with him to find an easier way, but after a thorough discussion there was no option other than to let him proceed and restart the testing process."

Shown below is a copy of the fourth disk, with updated files from between October 23rd and October 28th, 1985, which were likely provided to testers for further evaluation prior to the product's release.
Currently there is no clear policy on the build naming system. I've seen a few possible options from discussions on Discord and elsewhere:
* current style: each build has its own page with parent in the same depth, no subpages: for example, Windows 10 build 10.0.12345.main_fbl_telemetry_032619-1813 and Windows 10
* each build has its own page and is a subpage of the parent OS: for example, Windows 10/Build 12345 and Windows 10

* that would lead to fragmentation and the main pages will simply be too large

Please comment on what you think on them. If you think another option is better, please feel free to add them. X010 (talk) 17:52, 26 March 2019 (GMT)
Comments
WILSON2bGg That's pretty much the same as my first option, as the parent OS and the build will still be in the same depth. I've edited the options to make that more clear, and hence removed your option. Please let me know if it's still not correct. ==== Result ====
Thanks to all for the discussion. Based on Discord conversations, there is a 2:2 deadlock on options 1 and 2. We've decided to implement option 2 in the end. X010 (talk) 22:47, 31 March 2019 (BST)
Windows Longhorn Build 4074 is an official WinHEC 2004 preview build, which leaked in May, 2004.

It was among the first to include the (then-new) Jade visual style, and the Segoe UI font. Many icons from Windows XP were replaced with new, high-resolution versions.

There are three different architecture compilations of this build. These are x86, amd64, and IA-64; all of which have been leaked and are available on the BetaArchive FTP server.

__TOC__

Confusion
Many people confuse the build number with "4047" instead of 4074.

Features
Many features that were present in other builds have been removed or hidden in this build. As a result, the features that remained were improved, which include:

* Complete DWM Aero Effects - This build, unlike many other leaked builds, is the first build to have complete Aero effects in Explorer and Internet Explorer. However, a registry modification is required to extend the effect into the full UI of Explorer and Internet Explorer. The green translucent effect is used natively in this build instead of transparent "Glass".

* Aero Stars - An animated desktop which shows stars bouncing around the screen.

* Improved Preview and Filter Panes - This build has these panes improved, especially the Preview Pane, which is more functional than its leaked server counterpart, Server2008:4066.main.040226-1010

* Animated Preview Pane Aurora - This build contains an Animated Preview Pane Aurora, but requires some modification to enable it.

Only the x86 version has these features.
Bugs
There are some bugs/issues present in this build, some of which are:

* Folder Creation Bug - There is a bug present in this build that prevents occasional creation of folders in Explorer. However, several unofficial patches have been created to address this issue. You can try this fix (that may or may not work). Save the following in a text file and change its extension to
.reg
. Then double-click it to add it to the registry.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.Folder]
@="Folder"

* Faulty File Browse UI - The main File Browse UI has two noticeable bugs. The first being that the Navigation Bar only allows for navigation by clicking on parent directories in the bar. The second being that the Filter and Preview panes may occasionally appear black or show parts of content behind the window.

* Broken Safe Mode - This build has a glitch with the Explorer Safe Mode desktop prompt. The prompt will appear titled "Desktop" and will ask to proceed to work in safe mode or to System Recovery. Clicking Yes will hardly perform any action and will bring up another exact prompt. The desktop will not appear with the prompt and Explorer may not launch. However you can launch Task Manager by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+Esc
with which you can launch any programs you need or even browse in a limited way (By opening the Run dialog and clicking Browse).
Windows 8.1 (codenamed Blue) is a free update for the Windows 8 operating system. It is version 6.3 of the NT kernel.

Tami Reller, corporate vice president and chief financial officer of the Microsoft Windows division, announced the release of the Windows 8.1 Preview during the Build Windows conference in June, 2013.

Enhancements have been made to the overall Windows 8 experience, including the reinstatement of the Start button, the return of unified search results, new Start screen customization options, and horizontal application snapping improvements with support for up to 4 apps snapped depending on screen resolution. The minimum resolution for snapping has been reduced to 1024X768.

Windows 8.1 also includes new Alarm, Calculator, Movie Moments, and Sound Recorder applications. Internet Explorer 11 was also released with this update.

An update of Windows 8.1, known as Windows 8.1 Update 1, was released on 8th April 2014. It allows Store apps to be pinned and includes other updates as well. It also reduces the minimum system requirements for Windows, so that it can be installed on computers having only 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.
New features
RTM
Windows 8.1 was not that much of an revolutionary change as Windows 8 was from Windows 7, rather it mostly focused on improvements, which however are significant.
# The Start screen can now show the Windows desktop as its background.
# The possible sizes for app icons on the Start Screen was increased, with smaller and bigger options.
# Snap from Windows 8 has been improved, now allowing up to 4 apps to be snapped depending on resolution, and reducing the minimum resolution required for snapping to 1024X768.
# Camera can now be launched from the lock screen by swipping up.
# New apps such as Health and Fitness were introduced, and existing apps were greatly improved. Store was also redesigned.
# The PC Settings app was redesigned, and now includes far more options.
# Unified search, present in Windows 7 but removed in Windows 8, was bought back.
# The Start button was bought back.
# The option to show the desktop instead of the Start screen was introduced.
# OneDrive was greatly improved, and included the ability to set files as 'placeholders'.
# New wallpapers were added.
# Full camera backup support to OneDrive was added.
Update 1
# Metro apps can now be pinned to the taskbar.
# Metro apps have a desktop-like title bar that shows whenever the mouse is moved to the top part of the app.
# Search and Power(only for >8 inches displays) icons are now shown on the start screen.
# The taskbar can be invoked in the Start Menu and metro apps by moving the mouse to the bottom of the display.
# PC Settings now shows a option to use the legacy Control Panel, and it also adds some new options such as the ability to view disk space.
# Optimizations were done for reducing the disk space to 16 GB HDD and reducing the RAM to 1 GB. A new mode called as WIMBoot was introduced for such devices, which are intended to be low-cost tablets.
# A new edition called Windows 8.1 with Bing was introduced, free to tablets having displays <10 inches. This version is essentially identical to Windows 8.1 with some minor restrictions for manufacturers.
Removed or degraded features
# The introductory guide about the Start menu at the post-OOBE stage was removed.
# Windows Easy Transfer included in Windows 8.1 no longer includes the option to transfer files and settings to another device, only vice-versa.

Hello, we've noticed you're trying to help us move the pages to the new naming scheme. ::: WILSON2bGg I just wanted to improve the wiki, and I did NOT copypaste the box template from BetaWiki, I took it from Wikimedia Commons.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers. 07:41, 23 April 2019 (BST)

User:MCpillager, I appreciate your intention to help, but we have our own policies - some of them which are already in Wiki:Wiki Guidelines - and some of them which will be formed when appropriate. In general, please do not take policies from other wikis, and do not copy-paste content directly from other sources (including templates unless imported), as we need to satisfy attribution requirements. If you need anything to be imported, please let me know instead, and I encourage you to discuss your plans with the community. Thanks in advance. == Attacks ==
While I understand that you are having some difficulties over at BetaWiki, please note that BetaArchive Wiki is not the place to attack any user, for any reason, anywhere. As such, I've deleted pages like User_talk:LilShootDawg and User:MCpillager/The_Banned. Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks. :While I can understand your irritation at being blocked there, please do not bring issues there, here; we are not BetaWiki. This includes posting messages to others' talk pages. I suggest you bring it up with them through their community, not at BetaArchive. I speak from experience, having been blocked for nearly five years at Wikipedia. :::::::Yeah, the fact that you find bringing outside to BetaArchive and the wiki is not how you deal with getting blocked or how you go about getting said block removed. Such immaturity doesn't get you anywhere. And the BA thread was most likely locked because it was getting out of hand and it was just a bunch of bickering.
