MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) is an operating system for x86 based personal computers. It was based on QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), also known as 86-DOS, which was made by Tim Paterson and purchased by Microsoft. It was the most commonly used member of the DOS family of operating systems, and was the main operating system for personal computers during the 1980s and 1990s. It was preceded by M-DOS (also called MIDAS), designed and copyrighted by Microsoft in 1979. MS-DOS was written for the Intel 8086 family of microprocessors, particularly the IBM PC and compatibles. An MSX port was also made, called MSX-DOS.

It was gradually replaced on consumer desktop computers by operating systems offering a graphical user interface (GUI), in particular by various generations of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is still used by a tiny market niche where legacy DOS applications are still required, but no modern version is available.

Microsoft and IBM both had their own versions of MS-DOS. There are not many differences between the two versions before the split up, when IBM started developing PC-DOS independently of Microsoft. IBM distributed their version of MS-DOS first as IBM DOS (prior to version 5.0), and later on as IBM PC-DOS.

Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions 1.0 (also called Multimedia Windows) was released in October 1991. It is an OEM only release, with Tandy version being the only one available at this time for PC compatibles (there's also a floppy release for PC-98xx machines).

It includes new programs for audio and video playback, new CD-ROM, soundcard, display and joystick drivers, screensavers, as well as new Control Panel and Help applications like the ones seen later in Windows 3.1, but is otherwise the same as Windows 3.00a, on which it's based. Its distinctive multimedia features were later incorporated into Windows 3.1. Though this release can still run in all three modes, the new multimedia related features are only available in Standard and Enhanced modes.

As this is based on Windows 3.00a, it requires the SYSTEM.INI fix if you wish to run it in Enhanced Mode in Virtual PC 2004/2007 and it also requires the SB16 adapter card set correctly for proper operation of the multimedia components.

Information from computer magazines
Another possible OEM release is shown and described in November 1991 issue of Serbian computer magazine "Svet Kompjutera" ("World of computers"). The bootscreen shown in the magazine is different from the one in Tandy's release - it says "Windows Version 3.0 + Multimedia Extensions 1.0", whereas Tandy's release says "Windows graphical environment with Multimedia Extensions 1.0". Oddly, Tandy release uses both of these names during installation.

The magazine release could be from a different OEM or even a beta version (see below), though the latter seems less likely. The magazine also calls it "Multimedia Development Kit" (MDK).

Information from antitrust documents
Microsoft antitrust document PX07531 details the initial development plan for "Multimedia Windows". According to the document, alpha release was shipped to 35 external testing groups on 15th June 1990, with 25-30 additional sites to receive this alpha on 1st August. Beta release was to be released in mid-October and the final OEM Adaptation Kit (OAK) in December 1990. This timeline somewhat conflicts with the date of the Tandy release, which is from 1991.

Tandy is mentioned as the first OEM to launch their multimedia-capable PC-compatibles with Multimedia Windows. IBM, Fujitsu, Sharp, Olivetti, Zenith, Sony and Intel are listed as potential candidates for release.

Microsoft Works for Windows with Multimedia extensions (available on BetaArchive FTP) is mentioned as one of the apps to tie in with new features of Multimedia Windows.

New applications
Windows Help
Windows Help in this release is version 3.07. The About dialog also states "Version 3.1.061d", which suggests this release has some files from pre-release versions of Windows 3.1.

Control Panel
About dialog says "Control Panel for Windows graphical environment with Multimedia Extensions 1.0" and "Version 1.0".

Auto Install
A Tandy OEM application for installing other applications from removable media. Version 1.0.

Welcome
A fullscreen, run-once Tandy OEM application that says "Tandy presents the world of multimedia".

Multimedia Main Menu
A Tandy OEM application for easy access to various multimedia demos, applications and the Program Manager.

Reset Tandy Demo
A Tandy OEM application which resets the default shell back to FindCD.

FindCD
A Tandy OEM application that offers a tutorial and sound test. When finished, it first starts Welcome and then Multimedia Main Menu.

Startup fix
Tandy has changed the default shell to their application called FindCD (see above). This requires you to insert the installation CD, but the application will hang at the start and you won't be able to get into Windows itself. This is most likely caused by an incorrect setting of the Sound Blaster 16 card.

To fix this you must open the file
SYSTEM.INI
in the installation directory, find the
[boot]
section and change the line
shell=findcd.exe
to
shell=progman.exe
. Windows will now start Program Manager on startup.
TheCollector1988https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=Windows_2000&diff=8940Windows 20002015-01-22T13:59:01Z
TheCollector1988:

Windows 2000 (Codename Memphis NT, NT 5.0) was the last version of the Windows NT line of operating systems which was released for business users only and succeeded Windows NT 4. It also dropped the "NT" moniker in it's name, although it is still branded with "Based on NT Technology", possibly to prevent confusion with the 9X line (which was also named after the year of release at that time). This was done between Beta 2 and 3 stages, somewhere between builds 1911.1 and 1946.1.

It was originally supposed to be called Windows NT 5.0, but Microsoft first changed the name to Windows NT 2000 and later simply to Windows 2000. Extended support ended in 2010.

Editions
Windows 2000 was released in Workstation (Professional) and Server (Advanced Server , Datacenter Server , Server) editions.

Informations about each edition borrowed from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Professional
It is the client version of Windows 2000. It offers greater security and stability than many of the previous Windows desktop operating systems. It supports up to two processors, and can address up to 4 GB of RAM. The system requirements are a Pentium processor (or equivalent) of 133 MHz or greater, at least 32 MB of RAM, 650 MB of hard drive space, and a CD-ROM drive (recommended: Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 2 GB of hard drive space, and CD-ROM drive).
Server
It shares the same user interface with Windows 2000 Professional, but contains additional components for the computer to perform server roles and run infrastructure and application software. A significant new component introduced in the server versions is Active Directory, which is an enterprise-wide directory service based on LDAP. Additionally, Microsoft integrated Kerberos network authentication, replacing the often-criticised NTLM authentication system used in previous versions. This also provided a purely transitive-trust relationship between Windows 2000 domains in a forest (a collection of one or more Windows 2000 domains that share a common schema, configuration, and global catalog, being linked with two-way transitive trusts). Furthermore, Windows 2000 introduced a Domain Name Server which allows dynamic registration of IP addresses. Windows 2000 Server supports up to 4 processors, requires 128 MB of RAM and 1 GB hard disk space, however requirements may be higher depending on installed components.
Advanced Server
It is a variant of Windows 2000 Server operating system designed for medium-to-large businesses. It offers clustering infrastructure for high availability and scalability of applications and services, including main memory support of up to 8 gigabytes (GB) on Physical Address Extension (PAE) systems and the ability to do 8-way SMP. It supports TCP/IP load balancing and enhanced two-node server clusters based on the Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) in Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition. Limited number of copies of an IA-64 version, called Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Limited Edition were made available via OEMs. System requirements are similar to those of Windows 2000 Server, however they may need to be higher to scale to larger infrastructure.
Datacenter Server
It is a variant of Windows 2000 Server designed for large businesses that move large quantities of confidential or sensitive data frequently via a central server. Like Advanced Server, it supports clustering, failover and load balancing. Its minimum system requirements are normal, but it was designed to be capable of handing advanced, fault-tolerant and scalable hardware—for instance computers with up to 32 CPUs and 64 GBs RAM, with rigorous system testing and qualification, hardware partitioning, coordinated maintenance and change control. Limited number of copies of an IA-64 version, called Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, Limited Edition were made available via OEMs. System requirements are similar to those of Windows 2000 Advanced Server, however they may need to be higher to scale to larger infrastructure.

Service Packs
There were four service packs released for Windows 2000. All are considered as abandonware.
Service Pack 1
Service Pack 1 has been released on 15 August 2000.
Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 has been released on 16 May 2001.
Service Pack 3
Service Pack 3 has been released on 29 August 2002.
Service Pack 4
Service Pack 4 has been released on 26 June 2003.
Update Rollup 1
Update Rollup 1 for Service Pack 4 is a collection of hotfixes, mainly for the security-related issues. It is said to contain all the security-related hotfixes and some non-security updates released between SP4 and UR1 for SP4. This rollup has been released instead of Service Pack 5.
Service Pack 5
Microsoft planned to release Service Pack 5, but it has been cancelled and Update Rollup for SP4 has been released instead.

Windows 3.0 build 55 is the only leaked beta build of Windows 3.0. This is due to the fact that testers were under strict NDA, even so strict they were not allowed to say there even was a new version of Windows in development. It is unknown what stage this build is in.

It was leaked on BA by member The Distractor as a pre-installed folderdump. Attempts were made to recreate the installation disks, but the disks may not work properly in certain configurations. Best way to use this build is to install MS-DOS (any version from 3.31-6.22) and then copying the WINDOWS folder to the system partition. The system was configured with a Logitech mouse, which will not work in Virtual PC. This can be fixed by opening "SYSTEM.INI" and changing the line "mouse=lmouse.drv" to "mouse=mouse.drv", which will change the mouse to a generic Microsoft Serial Mouse/PS/2 compatible.

After the above change, the build will run fine in Virtual PC in Real and Standard Mode. 386 Enhanced mode only works using MS-DOS 3.x or PC-DOS 3.x.
TheCollector1988https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=MS-DOS&diff=8850MS-DOS2014-12-28T14:17:28Z
TheCollector1988: /* MS-DOS 6.x */

Windows NT October 1991 is the oldest known build of Windows NT. It was released at COMDEX '91 and was rushed to completion and was not released for the MIPS platform.

Several screenshots were shown by BetaArchive member linuxlove and a pre-installed VHD (For QEMU and VMware) was leaked containing the SDK and Free files of the OS.

In late 2011, the full CD was released on BetaArchive.

Windows NT 3.1 is the first version of Windows NT. It was targeted for the Intel i860 CPU, but was ported to the MIPS platform in 1989 and to the Intel 386 in 1990.
It was released for the Intel 386 and MIPS (MIPS64) platforms, and later on the DEC Alpha

Its codename was NT OS/2 due to the fact that NT was developed using parts IBM's OS/2 operating system.
