I found out that Microsoft China used to sell Beta3 versions to consumers for 210 CNY in '99 (At the '99 exchange rate, that should be about $25.40), here's an excerpt from the Sina news article:
However, I am now paying several times the price for the Beta3 and RC2 versions on CD-ROM. These physical CDs are rare on the webstore. The Windows 2000 Chinese Preview Program released at this conference contains the Simplified Chinese version (Beta 3) of Windows 2000 Professiona l and Windows 2000 Server, which is valid for 444 days. The product also includes a copy of the book "Windows 2000 First Look" published by Peking University and the "Windows 2000 First Look" information CD-ROM. The product has a suggested retail price of RMB 210 and is supported by Microsoft's Technical Support Center for two technical questions and a Web-based discussion group. Users are entitled to a credit of RMB 210 for the purchase of a full Windows 2000 product from the reseller from whom they purchased the Chinese preview. At the same time, all preview users who mail their product registration forms back to Microsoft will also receive a free copy of Windows 2000 RC2 (a newer version than beta).
Back on topic, I have dumped and uploaded these CDs into the BA database, all in Simplified Chinese.
