i8086/8088 doesn't support the protected mode (unlike 80286+) and HMA/XMS, so it cannot address more than 1Mb of RAM (80286 can address up to 16MB). Full support for these functions appeared only in Windows 2.x and became important only in Windows /286 2.1x, so using PC XT emulation is preferable for Windows 1.
