is it possible to install windows 8.1 build 9354 in vm?

Post by h1mm3r »

hi there, for 1-2 months, i've been strugging to install windows 8.1 :beta: build 9354 in vm, but...
there's a problem: since the build was leaked only in .wim file, is it still possible to install it?
thanks.

Why not? Boot into a Windows 10/8.1 ISO, and put the .wim in another ISO
First, format the disk. To do this, press shift + F10 to open CMD.

Type

Code: Select all

diskpart
Type

Code: Select all

Lis dis
This will show the disks you have inserted

Type

Code: Select all

sel dis x
X is the disk number you want to install it to

Type

Code: Select all

Clean
This will delete ALL of the contents of the VHD

Type

Code: Select all

cre par efi size=128
Assuming you are in EFI mode

Type

Code: Select all

form fs=fat32 quick
Type

Code: Select all

ass letter w
Type

Code: Select all

cre par prim
Type

Code: Select all

form fs=ntfs quick
Type

Code: Select all

ass letter c
Type

Code: Select all

exit
This will take you back to CMD

Alternatively, you can go to the format page in Windows Setup, and type 'new'. This will do the work for you!

Run this command

Code: Select all

Dism /get-imageinfo /imagefile:(path to image file)
This will show the indexes of the .wim. Each index corresponds to a different SKU. Choose the index you want (If there is only 1, it means that it was leaked in only 1 SKU)

Then run this command

Code: Select all

Dism /apply-image /imagefile:(path to imagefile) /index:(index you want) /applydir:(drive letter you want to install it to)
Finally, type

Code: Select all

bcdboot C:\windows /s W:\
W:\ should be the boot drive, C:\ should be the applydir drive

Hope this helps :)

I don't like Windows 10/11. I like (best to 4th best): 7, 8.1, Vista, and XP.

Although the idea is good, you should know that the current 9354 is Windows RT, and it cannot be installed on the vm (including qemu), we use SurafceRT or other ARMv7 devices to install it instead of installing it on the vm
(The actual machine demonstration of 9354 is that SurfaceRT is not any virtual machine software [Windows RT Build 9354 (Engineering Machine Original System) Quick Experience & Development Tools Demo] https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1ps421 ... 6193af5364)
I guess the other versions are not absent, but the fbl_partner_intelsoc branch is not leaked, and the available is the server version of 6.3.9354.fbl_partner_out11.130301-2000
Maybe I fill my life with derivatives?

im confused at Dism /apply-image /imagefile:(path to imagefile) /index:(index you want) /applydir:(drive letter you want to install it to) part, i did put index 1, did as a sources, but when i type /applydir:c: with it, it says: Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.
Edit: it worked after making "c" as a uppercase letter, that's why it didn't work :D

Hold up. It is ARMv7, something that I didn't realize earlier. The HAL doesn't work, so to get it you'll have to use real hardware (Surface RT).

Unfortunately, emulation support for ARMv7 Windows builds is extremely limited, and the current QEMU fork we have is only capable of running NT builds FBL_CORE1_MOBILE_DEV 8042 through FBL_WOA 8422, and WINBLUE_GDR 9600.17031 onwards (albeit with plenty of emulation inaccuracies - you might have trouble booting them at first). If you want to get these builds to run, your only next best option right now is to purchase an ARMv7 Windows tablet produced during 2012/2013 from a second-hand website like eBay. Here's the full list of ARMv7 Windows RT tablets that you might want to consider:
  • Microsoft Surface RT (flagship Windows RT launch device, NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC; best-behaved of all, pretty much compatible with every ARMv7 NT build from 804x+ onward)
  • Microsoft Surface 2 (NVIDIA Tegra 4 SoC, not compatible with Windows 8; works with Windows 8.1 onwards)
  • Asus VivoTab RT (NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC; Windows RT launch device)
  • Dell XPS 10 (Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 SoC; Windows RT launch device)
  • Nokia Lumia 2520 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC; works with Windows 8.1 onwards)
  • Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 (NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC; Windows RT launch device)
Besides, performance on real hardware is miles better than on an emulator. I would not recommend using QEMU for build like this.
