Running Aero Glass on Windows Longhorn Build 5048 in VirtualBox

Post by zzt47073 »

I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully run Aero Glass on Windows Longhorn Build 5048 within VirtualBox. Here is the screenshot to prove it.
I’m going to write the tutorial. :D

Well,I have to say that it is actually quite easy.
Open registry editor, and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft.Then create a key called DWM, and create the following dwords:
EnableMachineCheck -set it to 0
ForceSoftwareD3D -set it to 1
Glass -set it to 1
Metal -set it to 0
UseAlternateButtons - set it to 0

Start DWM,and you will find that DWM is working properly, even without a Graphics Driver installed!

For better performance, you can install the Vmware SVGA II driver.

Open the virtual machine settings, switch to the Display page, find the Graphics Controller option, and switch it to "VMSVGA".

Install the Vmware SVGA II driver. After installing the graphics driver, you may see a distorted display. This is normal. Just restart your virtual machine.
Done!

Warning:DO NOT try the drivers in VirtualBox Guest Additions. They are incompatible with 5048.

You’re right ,but this is the best I can do. It’s a pity that the method won’t work in any pre-reset builds, such as build 4074. So if you want to enable Aero in those builds , you have to use Vmware. Besides,I haven't tried it in other post-reset builds.
