86Box crashes while installing Windows 2000 SP4

Post by DeclanHaselhurst »

I'm trying to install Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 on 86Box, but while setup is on the "detecting hardware" screen (which appears early on in the GUI stage), 86Box crashes without warning. What should I do?

Display: S3 VIRGE/GX2 (Diamond Stealth 3D 4000)

Network driver: SLiRP mode Novell NE2000

Floppy driver: none
CD-ROM: ATAPI 0:1 86BOX CD-ROM (8x speed)

With an OS like Windows 2000 you really should be using VirtualBox or similar. 86box isn't up to it - you might be able to get it running, but it's not going to run worth a dam. Even if you spec the VM with solid simulated hardware, the emulator itself starts to struggle with newer configurations and OSes. This is especially true if you're not rocking top-notch hardware in your host. Like, I've got an AMD 3950X (OK it's a couple of years old now but it's still pretty high-end) in my desktop, with 32GB of RAM, and my machine would run a config like that a little slow.

Seriously just use VirtualBox.

Well, use the latest nightly builds, I can run Win2000 (be it without SPs or with them) 100% fine.

VirtualBox is unstable compared to emulators. Same with VMware.

UPDATE: I tried installing it again without the network drivers, and it worked!

Unsure what you must have been doing for it to be unstable. I've been using it since it first came out and never had one single problem.

Hi, the earliest version of windows that it possible to install and run is windows 7.

I've do this two times with different versions of 86box :
With 86box 3.0 build 2934
With 86box 4.0 build 4494

On the second time, I've access to internet, it's strange that you can't install 2000 with network drivers 🤔

I also have a VM of 2000 into 86box, and it have network driver installed and fully functional OOB.

The specifications are :
Machine: Super Socket 7 [VIA MVP3] Soyo 5EMA PRO (that is very close to a physical MB I have), with 233 MHz AMD K6 Model 6 and 32 MB of RAM
Display: [PCI] S3 Trio64 (Phoenix)
Mouse: Standard PS/2 Mouse also
Sound driver: [ISA16] Sound Blaster 16 (the classic version without PNP)
Network driver: SLiRP mode [ISA16] NE2000 Compatible (I've install this VM with an older version of 86box. It was formerly named juste NE2000)
Hard disk: 8 GB IDE 0:0 hard drive (CHS : 16.644 - 16 - 63)
Floppy driver: one 3.5" 1.44M
CD-ROM: ATAPI 0:1 86BOX CD-ROM (8x speed) also

This is similar to a bug reported last year on the DOSBox-X issues page on github.

Try setting it from NE2000 to AMD PCNet-FAST III.
Perhaps this will avoid the problem.
Spec: Intel Core i7 870(2.93GHz 4C8T), 16GB(1333MHz DDR3), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570(GDDR5 1.2GB,732MHz), 1.5TB(WD15EARS x2),120GB(HGST)
OS: Windows7 Home Premium 64Bit SP1
