Microsoft Multitasking MS-DOS 4.00 1984 Beta and Microsoft MS-DOS 4.0 Source Code

Post by johnlemon647 »

Scott Hanselman, with the help of internet archivist and enthusiast Jeff Sponaugle, has imaged these original disks and carefully scanned the original printed documents from this "Ozzie Drop" Microsoft in partnership with IBM and in the spirit of open innovation, is releasing the source code to MS-DOS 4.00 under the MIT license.

Glad to see that they release the source code for their old stuff, unlike other companies.

I don't like Windows 10/11. I like (best to 4th best): 7, 8.1, Vista, and XP.
Cars I like: Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Aura, Tata Tiago, Suzuki Dzire, and Suzuki Ciaz
New Zealand should win the T20 wc this year! (sad after 2019...)

this is a neat finding, maybe some of the commands in the provided documention also work in the final mtmsdos 4.00 release. had a hard time to use it due to the missing documentation for the available commands.
this beta just works fine on my olivetti m24sp.

But it provides documentation to technologies that, to this day, are not well understood.
I really wanted to see the source code to IFSFUNC, and tried disassembling it myself in the past, only to get lost in DOS kernel hooks that were never properly documented.

Agree, you can research the history and learn about completely new, unknown to us OS.

I wonder how many such OS Microsoft has with the code...

I think everyone will forget about this build after about 2 weeks, but if someone leaks screenshots of the unleaked version, then everyone will definitely think about asking for this build, and it will last for a long time, as it was with Windows 1.0 DR4.

So I go back to the OSBA days and remember certain flame wars too well, so I when I saw that thread as it was happening, I knew better than to think of it as being anything other than some pictures. There is no DR4 until there is DR4. That's probably why I forgot about it in the first place. Too many dealings with users who teased about having stuff but didn't share anything more than grainy pictures, back in the day, to care any more.

Basically you're probably right in saying everyone'll forget about this after a couple of weeks.
Long days, and pleasant nights.
