Windows 2000 Installation Auto Reboot during Installing Windows Components

Post by xkai »

Laptop: HP 战66四代
Processor: R7 5800U
Memory: 32GiB
SSD: Samsung pm981a 1T
Host OS: Win11 22H2 (22621.1194)
Virtual Machine Software: VMware 17

When I try to install Win2000, Setup runs fine during the txtsetup portion and the GUI portion's Installing Devices to Installing Network phase. But during Installing Windows Components phase, Setup always auto reboots when the progress bar gets to Completing Configurations of Distributed Transaction Coordinator. I tested Chinese Simplified & en-us version of Win2000 Pro & Advsrv (SP4 slipstreamed), and 无限的未知 mod version, all have this serious problem! Several years ago, I could install Win2000 successfully in VMware. So I guess this problem is related to PC's speed. But another problem, if your pc is too slow, Setup may stuck when Installing Devices is completed. the progress bar gets to the end but Setup doesn't go to the next screen (Regional and Language Settings).

I have set virtual machine's HW compatibility to 5.x, memory to 64MiB, hdd to IDE mode and host Os's power mode to best power efficiency to slow down my laptop. but no effects. Today's pcs are too fast than ever. Setup still runs at a high speed and this problem can't be avoided.

Win95, 98, Me, NT3.x, 4.0, 5.1 & higher all installs and runs smoothly.

I'm not experienced in vmware, but I know that if speed is the problem, you can try to limit the executions per cpu cycle like you can on virtualbox.

You can download previous versions from their site here. The oldest version you can get as of now is vmware player 14.

The new version of VMware is not compatible with older systems, you may want to try VMware 14 and earlier to install it

I once installed Windows 98 with VMware 16 and the process didn't seem to be so smooth, with VMware 12 everything worked fine, it is recommended to use an earlier version of VMware

Pretty sure that's our old friend, a race condition in the Windows 2000 IDE driver.

From experience, simply smashing the keyboard and moving the mouse like crazy during the installing components phase is generally enough to prevent the bug.

Set the VMware compatibility mode back to version 6.0
that usually will fix the issue.
