It introduced Windows Movie Maker and System Restore. Compared to Windows 98 SE, 2000 or XP, this OS sucked very much, party due to aging 9x kernel and removal of real-mode MS-DOS.

I'd still very much take it over XP any day, since that doesn't have product activation or intrusive .NET service advertising. I've wanted to do a remaster of this operating system with Kugee from Razorback that makes it more optimized for slower machines, particularly replacing the Active Desktop shell with the more compact Windows 95 shell, as well as making more components like Movie Maker optional, and remove certain things like the internet games since those are no longer in service.

I've got it running on an old ThinkPad and it works great. I've heard that mixing NT and 9x drivers is what caused a lot of the crashing, and the install on the ThinkPad was installed with a burned copy of the restore CD I found on archive.org, so drivers have already been sorted. Hasn't crashed once.
I collect old laptops and mess with old software.

Check out my website for vintage computer reference information, info on my collection, and more!

My projects are currently on indefinite hiatus due to lack of motivation. See my past ones here: https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index. ... nonymous74

Once they sorted out driver issues and app compatibility issues, it ran quite OK and I meanwhile prefer it over Win98SE due to the better USB support.

If you disable System Restore and install all available updates, then it should run better.

A great and fast OS once you get the hardware choice just right and get rid of the shovelware such as System Restore. In my experience an Intel chipset based board and other hardware from the era makes it a big win. My P3 600E build with Intel 810 based Asus board, 256MB of RAM, a 10 gig drive and an ATI Rage XL PCI almost beats my 3900X beast in boot time, and that thing has two NVMe drives in RAID-1 as well :D even the casual use is way faster
Main computer: HP 820 G4 | i5-7500U | 16GB DDR4 | 256GB M.2 SATA SSD & 2TB 2.5" HDD | Linux Mint 21.3 Xfce
XP PC: ASUS P5QPL-AM | Xeon L5408 | 4GB DDR2-800 | 250GB 870 EVO SSD | ATi HD 6450 | XP SP4
9x PC: MSI MS-6368 v5 | Pentium III-S 1266 | 640MB PC133 | ATi 7000 PCI | 10GB HDD | WinMe
Other PCs: 2x EeePC 701 (1x spare, 1x XP SP3), HP 800 G2 DM (Win11 23H2), Wyse Cx0 (XP SP1a)
I collect Windows CE devices.
