Hello,
I have bought a Powerbook 1400, running on Mac OS 9. I want to format it but I don't have the CD-ROM module, so I have download Mac OS 8, the last version on floppy disks.
However, when I boot to the first install floppy I have the "welcome on Mac OS 8" screen, when only the "continue" option. I clic on "continue", agree the license, I select the internal hard drive and I have this message: "The selected disk is locked".
If I launch the installer from Mac OS 9, I can make a fresh install but not erase all the drive.
What I can do for format this drive and install Mac OS 8? Does it exist an OS 9 tools floppy for format the disk?
Very cordially.

Re: Disk locked for install Mac OS 8.
My guess is that it has something to do with the Mac OS 8 disks not supporting HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) format. That's a tricky situation, you may need to move the drive to a different computer to format it if possible. I don't know of any OS 9 disk tools disk existing unfortunately.
As a fellow PB 1400 owner, I'd like to warn you about 2 things:
1. The battery is prone to leaking, I'd remove it and check if you haven't already.
2. The plastics have gone super brittle. This causing the display housing itself to form cracks each time you open/close the display hinges. I'd minimize hinge use as much as possible, store it open if you can so that you don't have to open/shut the hinge each time you want to use the laptop.
For your disk issue, I'm going to refer you over to 68kmla.org, which is a great forum full of vintage mac enthusiasts who probably have a solution to your problem. My username over there is 3lectr1cPPC.

Hello, thank you for your answer.
I will check your other site, I will avoid to open this computer if I can. I don't want to break it!

Don’t worry about opening it up to get the drive out, that part is super easy. Just sliding one part away, lifting up the keyboard, and unscrewing 2 screws will do it.

In fact, I have made this with this video:

If I don't find other solution I will buy an USB adapter for format it with my iMac G3, or a Linux PC.
