The only way to know it for sure is to give it a try...
But after having had a quick look at your laptop's probable specs (since you haven't specified them, I am assuming you have a Pentium 4 CPU and an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 GPU), I assume that Whistler can be installed on it. When it'll come to installing drivers, I guess you should try installing the ones made for Windows 2000, if HP ever provided those, otherwise you'll have to get them by yourself.
So, in the end, burn Whistler to a CD, make sure to change the BIOS date and see if you can install it.

2. Why HP? The laptom is Compaq Evo N800v, not HP;
3. I will post my success/failure as soon as I get a HDD for the laptop.

I LOVE Windows Whistler Build 2419!
And Windows XP RTM!

But Whistler Build 2416 is beta, and compatibility problems may occur. For example, VirtualBox guest additions work on both Win2k and WinXP but do not work on Whistler.

I mean directly installing Windows XP Beta on that laptop (on the HDD itself)
