Windows XP Starter Edition on VMWare on non supported processors
Windows XP Starter Edition on VMWare on non supported processors
I have figured out how to get Starter edition to run on VMware on modern processors. All you need to do is use a CPUID mask in the .vmx file.
1. Install Starter edition like normal.
2. When you get the “Unsupported State” message, shut down the VM and CLOSE VMWARE.
3. Open the .vmx of the VM in your preferred text editor.
4. At the bottom of it, add these lines.
cpuid.0.ebx = "0110:1000:0111:0100:0111:0101:0100:0001"
cpuid.0.ecx = "0100:0100:0100:1101:0100:0001:0110:0011"
cpuid.0.edx = "0110:1001:0111:0100:0110:1110:0110:0101"
cpuid.1.eax = "----:0000:0000:0000:----:1111:0100:0110"
5. Save the file, close the text editor, and open VMWare.
6. Start the VM, and there should be no more “Unsupported State” error.
CPUID lines - these are supposed to fake a early 64 bit AMD Opteron.
XP itself will not care, it will still boot and will show your actual processor in the System properties. The CPU check only checks for the CPUID.
VMWare tools install just fine and can adjust your screen resolution. There is no 1024x768 limit.

I would also like to know how to disable unsupported state on Starter Edition. But I think its driven by kernel. Or anybody have patched mentioned DLL? It would be very welcomed addition for XP2ESD project as only Starter edition cannot be successfully captured according this unsupported error.

The CPU check is done by winlogon or something, not ediskeer.dll iirc.

Won't work. Find where the error message is located, find the code that loads the error message and then see what triggers it.

Re: Windows XP Starter Edition on VMWare on non supported processors
I only know it's related to HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\Starter Installed, when changing to 0, then we can ge rid of this error. But this solution is unusable for deploying.
I was thinking about creating nLite addon to Remove this restriction, but without luck. It still doesn't fits my needs for XP2ESD project

Re: Windows XP Starter Edition on VMWare on non supported processors
I think we need to look at the Asian releases, they can go up 2gbs of ram and the code is not in there. Using the Latest version of virtual box I got no shutdown error on the machine on Russian copy yes. So we can take a look at Indonesian and windows xp starter edition Malaysia. To see what to do.

I tried it, and I can't login to the Windows XP Starter Edition after installing because Owner account is disabled, and I can't find a way to enable the Owner accountGeorge King wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 1:05 amI only know it's related to HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\Starter Installed, when changing to 0, then we can ge rid of this error. Re: Windows XP Starter Edition on VMWare on non supported processors
I am using VmWare Workstation 17.0 and with the vmx's patch it worked. I think that I recieved unsupported state 6 error because my processor is an Intel Core I5.
