SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
I wanted to check out the TTS voices in Mac OS 9, but when I selected my desired one, and clicked Play, instead of playing a promo, my emulator (SheepShaver) crashed. How do I fix that?

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
In the Sheepshaver GUI, Memory/Misc Tab, did you select “Ignore Illegal Memory Accesses”? This can prevent some programs from crashing SheepShaver.

Nope, Ticking that option freezes up the emulator when sound is tried to play (Guest Mac OS won't respond to clicks, Windows 10 Host, Mac OS 9.0.4).

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
I don't know how to resolve the problem in Sheepshaver, but it does work in QEMU on Windows 10, using the Qemu-Win64-5.2-Screamer-09-12-2020 build, with Mac OS 9.2.1.

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
I tested it in Qemu-Win64-5.2-Screamer-09-12-2020, with Mac OS 9.2.1 using this command:
qemu-system-ppc-screamer-fpu.exe -L pc-bios -boot d -m 512 -M mac99 -prom-env "auto-boot?=true" -prom-env "boot-args" -prom-env "vga-ndrv?=true" -drive file=MacOS9.2.1.iso,format=raw,media=cdrom -drive file=MacOS9.2.1.img,format=raw,media=disk -sdl -netdev user,id=network01 -device sungem,netdev=network01

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
In Sheepshaver, with OS 9.0.4, use an old world rom with 128 MB of memory, not a new world rom. That worked for me.

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
Which old world ROM should I choose? If I choose random, SheepShaver might say that ROM is unreadable.

Google redundant robot sheepshaver, you may find what you're looking for.
Rename the rom to Mac OS.ROM

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
What ROM should I choose? 4MB Old World or New World?
EDIT: Figured out, Old world 4MB.
But the sound is clicking.

Re: SheepShaver crashes whenever system plays a sound
It may simply be an issue with the hardware you are running it on. I've heard that much of Sheepshaver's code is very old, so it wouldn't surprise me if issues like this crop up on modern hardware. I had an odd mouse issue on QEMU that was entirely caused by the laptop I was running it on, when I got a new one the issue went away. Your issue could be similar unfortunately.
I collect old laptops and mess with old software.
