This codec is useful for when you want to bundle the VC-1 dependency with an application without requiring the user to upgrade their Windows Media Player, which would also require several accompanying OS-specific hotfixes. This would have the unfortunate side-effect of requiring the user to change their media player when they may prefer an older version for preference or presentation.

In my case I was playing with Microsoft Expression Encoder which did not include this required codec.
