Creating A Windows 7 Build 7000 Theme For Build 7601

Post by arcadianblue »

I always like the look of the stock Windows 7 Build 7000 better than Build 7601. However, Build 7601 supports more Web Browsers and applications than Build 7000. But, you can transform 7601 to mimic the look of Build 7000 by modifying/editing some dll files. You’ll need Resource Hacker, Build 7000 iso and take ownership to modify these files.

Almost all system icons -> %windir%\System32\imageres.dll
Login Screen background -> %windir%\System32\imageres.dll
Login Screen image resources -> %windir%\System32\authui.dll
Start ORB images -> %windir%\Explorer.exe -> Bitmap -> 6801 – 6812

Wallpapers are stored in -> %windir%\Web\Wallpaper\Windows
Themes are stored in -> %windir%\|Resources\Themes\Aero

One must edit Bitmap # 633 and # 632 in the shell32.dll file was to get the correct control panel side panel image. If #633 is not modified, you will get image below. To get correct white text, one must edit the Aero Theme Windows Visual Style File (.msstyles).

Here is correct results if you do above steps.

My final look after changing logon screen and start orb with Resource Hacker

Hi, great tutorial but could you specify where exactly in the file is the information about the text color located?

i'd say either this

or this

didn't test anything...

also what "author" doesn't say, is when you edit "aurora rays" file, MSSTYLE will become corrupted
even with proper alpha blending, so either he is full of BS, or he didn't even edit that part

The image #632 in the shell32.dll which resides in system32 folder, must be edited with photoshop to remove the "Aero Glass" ripple effect. To change text colour, edit the Title text under control panel listing in aero theme msstyles file which is located inside of theme folder which lies in the resource folder.
