Have you tried looking on the catalog? Old updates are still there

Yep, I tried that first before posting here - no luck. But thank you for the suggestion!Microsoft Update Catalog wrote: We did not find any results for "kb968006"

I did research and couldn't find a thing on it. I read though that the Server 2003 version of it should work just as well but only for testing purposes.

Re: [REQUEST] WindowsXP-KB968006-v2-x86-ENU.exe
Yes, that's my understanding as well. The Windows Server 2003 version of this patch (WindowsServer2003-KB968006-x86-ENU.exe) has been preserved various places online, and it is possible to hack the installer to get it to load on Windows XP. So, I could do that..
But for preservation purposes, I'd really like to locate the actual Windows XP version of this release!
Thank you very much for your time, though. I really appreciate it.

Isn't this a patch that got superseeded or replaced at some point? That's usually the case for hotfixes that are no longer in the catalog.
I'm also having difficulties finding out what it does. Is it a revoked root certificate update or the Windows installer by any chance?

Re: [REQUEST] WindowsXP-KB968006-v2-x86-ENU.exe
Essentially, KB968006 contains the most recent "stable" release of Windows Installer 3.1.
WindowsXP-KB968006-v2-x86-ENU.exe updates msi.dll to version 3.1.4001.5786.
WindowsXP-KB968006-v2-x86-ENU.exe updates msi.dll to version 3.1.4001.5786.
You could consider KB968006 to be superseded by a couple of other releases, in a couple of ways:Microsoft Knowledge Base wrote: Article ID: 968006 - Last Review: April 28, 2009 - Revision: 1.1
After you uninstall some software updates in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP, some assembly files still display the updated file version instead of the original file version
SYMPTOMS
On a computer that runs Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you uninstall some software updates. After the uninstall operation is complete, some software assembly files still display the updated file version instead of the original file version.
For example, on a Windows XP-based computer, you have the 2007 Microsoft Office system installed. If you install and then uninstall 2007 Office system Service Pack 2 (SP2), some assembly files remain from the 2007 Office system SP2 version.
Note These files are located in the global assembly cache (%SystemRoot%\Assembly\GAC).
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of an error in Windows Installer. You experience this issue if the software update that you remove has an entry in RemoveFile table.
- KB942288-v3 - This KB upgrades Windows Installer to version 4.5. KB942288-v3 supersedes KB968006 in the same sense that Windows Installer 4.5 replaces version 3.1.
- KB971913 - If you want to stick with Windows Installer 3.1, then KB971913 could be considered a replacement for KB968006. KB971913 upgrades msi.dll to version 3.1.4001.5841, but this patch is a QFE ("Quick Fix Engineering") release, one of the by-request-only hotfixes, so is not considered a "stable" release.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I actually already checked there - they only managed to archive the WindowsServer2003 version of the hotfix. The WindowsXP version of this hotfix remains elusive. I appreciate you helping me, though.
