Windows 98 SE build 2184 boot disk?

Post by Winins »

Yesterday, a user on BetaWiki has found a bootdisk for Windows 98 build 2184, which is unleaked. At first i thought that it was fake, but these images speak for itself:

So it might be real, it might be fake. I didn't do an indepth research, but if it's real, I might upload it to the FTP (as NT 683 bootdisks are there).

You can try it out here if you want to take a look.

The files have dates of April 26, 1999, so it's fake. (SE RTM has file dates of April 23, 1999, for reference)

2184 has a compile date of April 26 1999 though. It might be a Win95 842 situation, when a beta gets compiled after the RTM etc.

Apparently, for Windows 95, "If the build number is 700 or higher, it's the RTM." (not counting OSR betas)

And... where did you find that information?

From a blog post by Raymond Chen (someone at Microsoft) about the build numbers of Windows.

OK, but they still have build numbers earlier than RTM so they are technically beta. Same goes for 2184, which just might be a Chinese localisation build.

Windows 98 SE Simp. Chinese RTM is dated 1999-05-06, so beta indeed.

That's just something they told developers.
