I want an all-in-one Windows bootscreen editor.

Post by LeonardoIannelliRETRIEVES »

(I don't know which forum to put this in, but I thought this one was the most appropriate)

I know there are utilities that let you edit Windows XP's boot screen. By that logic, I know there are probably programs for editing Windows 9x and 2000 boot screens as well. But, I have an idea. Windows 9x and 2000 boot screens not only have visuals you can change, but from what I can tell they have variables in their code that define where the progress bars are. I don't know if XP has that too, but it might, and if it does, later versions do too since they all use the same boot screen format as XP (albeit as a fallback in Windows 7/Server 2012 and later).

I think there should be a utility that can edit all the Windows bootscreens I mentioned. Not only would it be fun to mess around with, but it would also be a useful tool for making custom versions of those OSes. It'd be even cooler if this all-in-one tool could edit the other Windows bootscreens. There are already utilities for editing the Windows 7 and 8/10 bootscreens, so why not include something like that? Plus, maybe it could also edit Windows 3.x's static image bootscreens, or even the text-based ones of Windows 1 and 2!

Alright, maybe I'm getting too hyped up. But if this is something you didn't know you needed until I told you about it, I'd love to hear your thoughts Maybe someone will actually make it, we'll see.

Uhm-oh... I don't think thats a cool idea, before you do it yourself. People, who want to change bootscreen, will already know what program do it. Even if they don't know name of it. Google is a great thing.
>useful tool for making custom versions of those OSes.
It's not working so. There was many real custom windows projects, like Sigma OS, 2008 R2, Windows 98IF (in Russia). They haven't changed logos. But created very good customs.
Think about your ideas, maybe you can do something greater.

You have a point. But wouldn't it be more convenient if it was all in one place?

It works with some warez, but not with it. Where you will take sources for that project? They will be self made? I can't put from my eyes that it will be student app writen on .py for cmd (nothing personal). If you can make realy universal app, that based only on your source code, and it will have cool GUI - i will rate it 5 stars.

I only know programs that edit Windows XP and 2000 bootscreen but i dint saw one for 9x or others. There can't be an universal bootscreen editer because of the NT versions so the bootscreen commands is different. (Or they would use different options)

Windows 9X

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOGO.SYS

Windows NT

For WindowsNT, different resolutions are okay. The files are:
C:\winnt\winnt256.bmp -- startup (NT workstation only)
C:\winnt\lanma256.bmp -- startup (NT server)
C:\winnt\lanmannt.bmp -- same bitmap as lanma256.bmp on a default NT server setup
Simply replace those files with the bitmaps of your choice.

Windows 2000 / XP

Start Resource Hacker.
From the file menu, select Open.
Navigate to the \%systemroot%\system32 folder (e.g., c:\windows\system32) and select ntoskrnl.exe.
From the File menu, select Save As and enter a name of ntoskrmd.exe (now you can safely edit the new file without risk of damaging the original file).
Expand the Bitmap folder in the left-hand pane, expand item 1, and select item 1033.
From the Action menu, select "Save [ Bitmap : 1 : 1033]".
Enter a location and name to use to save the existing bitmap, then click Save (keep Resource Hacker open and running on your system).
Start Paint Shop Pro and load the bitmap you just saved. (If you're modifying an XP boot screen, you'll see only a black image; if you're modifying a Win2K boot screen, skip to step 11).
From the Colors menu, select Load Palette.
Load the 16.pal file (i.e., the viewable palette file) you downloaded and ensure you've selected "Maintain indexes" under the "Apply palette using" section. After you load the viewable palette, the boot screen bitmap will appear on screen.
Modify the boot screen bitmap as you desire.
If you're modifying an XP boot screen, after you finish modifying the bitmap, select Load Palette from the Colors menu, then load the win.pal file (i.e., the Windows palette file) you downloaded. The screen will go black again. If you're modifying a Win2K boot screen, continue to the next step.
Save the bitmap file and close your paint program.
Back in Resource Hacker, ensure that you still have the 1 under Bitmap selected (from step 5).
From the Action menu, select Replace Bitmap.
Press the "Open file with new bitmap" button.
Select the new bitmap you created, then click Open.
On the Replace dialog box, ensure that bitmap 1 is selected, then click Replace.
From the File menu, click Save.

I don't know, I would rather prefer multiple programs, each of which is perfectly tailored for a single boot screen mechanism than some AIO utility that had to make many compromises in order to support all the formats in existence.

Making a unified program and supporting every mechanism perfectly are not mutually exclusive. It would just take time and skill to design and implement such a program correctly.
Windows Defender for great justice! Bugs are an international trading company. I need to defeat the anti-debugging and obfuscation methods. It wasn't for Intel's absurd ability to load in ie6. Why even waste time with people in an envelope?

If this does become a reality, it should be compatible with all versions of Windows (1.01 to 10) so that the boot screen can be changed easily.

Windows 1.0 wouldn't really be possible, as the boot screen is literally a program by itself.

Windows 2.0 has the strings and logo in .LGD, but even there are some vendors who decided to be incompatible with the rest.

Windows 1.0’s boot screen is inside WIN.COM. How would that not be possible?

Perhaps a similar reason why you can't really add new features to a program without recompiling it from source?

You can customize Windows 1.x logos for sure but not that easy. Windows 1.x logos are not just bitmaps, they have code in them as well. The best way would be to modify the Windows 2.x logo source and re-assemble it. It is pretty hard to convert normal bitmaps to the format the logo uses and even harder to disassemble to logo, apply changes and reassemble it.

Code: Select all

; The logo code draws the merging Microsoft logo on the display.
; The data is dynamic, generated by Window's Setup program.
;
; The data consists of 2 product description lines, 6 copyright
; lines, and the actual logo image consisting of a merge flag
; (0 = don't merge), the height of the logo data, and the width
; of the logo data, and the actual bits.
;
; Once the logo is drawn, all the logo drawing code will be discarded
; from memory (the address of the first disposible byte of code is
;       returned to the caller).
;
; The logo code is also called when Windows is shutting down. This
; allows any final processing that is required to be performed (i.e.
; put the Hercules adapter into text mode).

;       Lots Of Stuff
;
; For the Hercules and the EGAMono, when we talk about left-justified
; or right-justified scan lines, we are talking about two continuous
; scans on the display, one which starts at location X, and another
; which starts at location X+RepLine (which will contain a duplicate
; of the scan line at X to double the height of the logo).
;
; For the CGA, there is no duplication. The EGA is treated the
;       same as the EGA.
;
;
; For the hercules, things look like this:
;
;
;                   ---------------------------
;           0000h   image scan line 0
;           005Ah   image scan line 2
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------   } Left-Justified scans
;           2000h   replicated image scan line 0
;           205Ah   replicated image scan line 2
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------
;           4000h   image scan line 1
;           405Ah   image scan line 3
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------   } Right-Justified scans
;           6000h   replicated image scan line 1
;           605Ah   replicated image scan line 3
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------
;
;
; For the EGAMono, things look like this:
;
;
;                   ---------------------------
;           0000h   image scan line 0             *
;           0050h   replicated image scan line 0  *   * = Left-Justified scans
;           00A0h   image scan line 1             +
;           00F0h   replicated image scan line 1  +   + = Right-Justified scans
;           0140h   image scan line 2             *
;           0190h   replicated image scan line 2  *
;           01E0h   image scan line 3             +
;           0230h   replicated image scan line 3  +
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------
;
; For the CGA (EGA), things look like this:
;
;
;                   ---------------------------
;           0000h   image scan line 0
;           0050h   image scan line 2
;           00A0h   image scan line 4             } Left-Justified scans
;           00F0h   image scan line 6
;                   ....
;                   ---------------------------

Oh.
I have edited the 1.0 bootscreen in word before though.
Is it string hacks or the merging Microsoft logo? I'd like to know how to edit the merging logo in Word (maybe possible with extensive hex editing but I doubt that can be done in Word).

Of course you can change the loading screen of any version of the Windows operating system, but here you cannot talk about one specific magic program. Here you need a compilation of several programs and debug instruments.
