Question about porting build 9785 start menu to 8.1

Post by Jake harrison »

hi i've remove the digital signature of explorer from windows build 9785 and tried running it on windows 8.1 but it sadly didn't work. A few weeks ago i saw an image of the start menu running on windows 8.1 so it must be possible but does anyone know how to get it working?

In every build of Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, the start menu is an independent app instead of being integrated in explorer.exe. So this is the proper way: copy this menu from 9785 to 9600 C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy.
Then run PowerShell as admin, navigate to this folder and type: Add-appxpackage -register -AppxManifest.xml

No, it's not. A quick Google search would have revealed that StartMenuExperienceHost wasn't a thing until the May 2019 Update 8-)

Before that, there was the Window Shell Experience Host and even then, that was not introduced until late Technical Preview 2 builds (I'm thinking of build 10041 so). I'm thinking that the early Start Menu might be tied into the explorer process.

You can try porting files whose names are the same as those on KB3033055.
I had tried it but failed because I couldn't remove the digital signature of explorer. Can you help me remove it?
