Windows XP build 2416 on Acer TravelMate 2480
Windows XP build 2416 on Acer TravelMate 2480
Is it possible to install Windows XP build 2416 on an Acer TravelMate 2480? I have the BIOS date set correctly, but every time I run it, it hangs at Setup is starting Windows Whistler. Any solutions?

Could it be due to the support those TravelMates might have with some early Windows XP builds? I'm no expert, but I know certain Whistler builds around 2419 can sometimes show problems with installation. But that kind of problem only happens to me when I don't have the BIOS set. Maybe it could be a problem with one of the setup files?

It's not a setup file as it works fine in a virtual machine with the correct date set, which is January 4th, 2001. Could be an issue with the computer then as both Windows 2000 and XP work for it.JonathonWyble wrote:Could it be due to the support those TravelMates might have with some early Windows XP builds? I think it could be an issue with your computer. Because some computers do tend to act a bit funky with some beta OSes, well, with a lot of exceptions.Moline wrote:It's not a setup file as it works fine in a virtual machine with the correct date set, which is January 4th, 2001. Ah. That would make sense.JonathonWyble wrote:I think it could be an issue with your computer. Try upgrading from win2k.

You may also want to disable any extraneous devices (such as parallel ports) in the BIOS. Those have been known to hang Windows 2000 setup at that point on some newer boards (like X79 and newer though).
I also did experience a "setup is starting..." hang when trying to install build 2296 on a ThinkPad T60; I never did get to the bottom of that however.

TravelMate 2480 is around the Pentium M/Celeron M era, so it should still work.
win32 - tried a vanilla 2000 install on that T60? 2296 should install just fine on a i945 based machine (I know that as I had a desktop Gigabyte board with that chipset and 2296 installed successfully, and so did a vanilla 2000 SP4 install )
EDIT: My bad, the 2480 is around the same period as the T60. Try disabling Wi-Fi (as I found out it has a Wi-Fi card) and reducing the RAM to 512MB (I don't know of any DDR2 SODIMM stick smaller than that)

I did say that OS betas sometimes refuse to work well on actual hardware. I don't know why that is, but usually one would find ways for them to work on a real computer. Hence his TravelMate being made from the Windows XP era...Schneider616 wrote:TravelMate 2480 is around the Pentium M/Celeron M era, so it should still work.

Yes, it works great, as does build 2419. Unfortunately I wiped my install USB between then and now so it will take awhile before I can get around to attempting to boot 2296 setup again, following my own recommendation.win32 - tried a vanilla 2000 install on that T60? 2296 should install just fine on a i945 based machine (I know that as I had a desktop Gigabyte board with that chipset and 2296 installed successfully, and so did a vanilla 2000 SP4 install )

I would actually say all the time since they are betas after all. I do wonder which betas give the most trouble though.JonathonWyble wrote:I did say that OS betas sometimes refuse to work well on actual hardware. Well, most betas are only under development, so of course you probably shouldn't expect them to work properly But like I said, those problems don't happen all the timeVoyambar wrote:I would actually say all the time since they are betas after all.
