Whistler 2223 stuck at Setup is starting Windows 2000

Hello.

Recently I tried to install Whistler 2223, but it completely hung up at "Setup is starting Windows 2000". I tried EVERYTHING - setting the hard drive to SCSI, back to IDE, changing system type from XP Professional to 2000 Professional, pressing F5 and selecting "Standard PC" - nothing. It still hangs.

I'm using VMware Player.

Can someone help me?

Make sure that every kind of hardware virtualization technology is disabled. You can check it from the virtual machine's properties. Also, I don't know which version of VMware Player you are using, but you could try lowering the virtual machine's hardware compatibility.

The only hardware virtualization technology or at least something what is related to it which I found in VM properties was acceleration of 3D graphics. I disabled it - no luck. Also, I'm using VMware Player 15. I searched the entire VM settings, but couldn't find anything about hardware or version compatibility.

I tried both trying to disable the ACPI at HAL menu and at the VM's .VMX file - nothing.

Whistler 2223 installs easily in PCem.

My host is Windows 10 1803.

Use the Super 7 machine in PCem. I was going to say VPC 2007 but you're probably on 64-bit, so you cant install it.

OP wants to use Player, so let him.

You are using a version too new.
Start with 3.1.4 and work your way up.



Also, set this in the BIOS:

Press escape as soon as the bios splash screen comes up, scroll down to "Enter Setup" and press enter.

I set this up by setting the guest to Windows 2000 Professional with everything on default settings. AKA just kept clicking "next."
I also did not F5 and change the machine type in Whistler setup. I just let it run.

And wait about a minute for the kernel to detect hardware during the "Setup is starting Windows 2000."

3.1.4 didn't work on my Windows 10. The earliest version I could get to work was 6.0, and it just randomly rebooted while "Setup is starting Windows 2000". Going to install it on PCem.

I tried to install this on PCem. It's saying "Windows failed to install product catalogs".

Set the BIOS date, also dont forget to disable time syncing in the VM settings.

It was already there. I rechecked - it's still there.

You will need to restart setup all over again after you set bios date.

Finally fixed it. ACPI has nothing to do with CD-ROM install hanging on "Setup is starting Windows 2000", it hangs anyways. Here's what I did to fix the issue:

1. Create a VM with Windows 2000 Professional set on OS type.
2. Go to config and reconfigure the VM as you want(I just deleted the USB controller and virtual printer), but do not touch the hard disk and CD-ROM, also, add a floppy drive.
3. Mount the 98 SE (I used the No-Ramdrive one) bootdisk.
4. Patch it to avoid the banana.ani bug.
5. Fdisk and format the hard drive.
6. Go to your Whistler CD.
7. Go to the i386 directory and run WINNT.EXE.
8. Just install it normally until the end.

Note: If you got stuck at "Setup is detecting devices like mouse and keyboard" for a long time (there are 2 parts when it appears to get stuck, but it's actually not), just wait. If it's stuck for a really long time, there's something wrong in the config.
Note 2: If your VM randomly rebooted while it was configuring some services (after network adapter configuration part) that's because you didn't set your OS type at Windows 2000.

If you installed the OS correctly, you will get a Network Identification Wizard. Just go through all the screens on there until you get into desktop.

Installing some VMware video drivers:

VMware-specific note: Do NOT try to install VMware Tools (even old version), they don't like early Whistlers.

1. Mount the TCB VMware Drivers ISO into the machine.
2. Go to the Device Manager.
3. Find Video Controller (VGA-compatible) or something like that.
4. Click on Update Driver or Reinstall Driver (you will find only one of two)
5. Point the driver at D:\VMX_SVGA II\VMware 8.x\x86\vmx_svga.inf
6. Choose VMware SVGA II.
7. The screen should go flicker and go black after some time. Wait a few minutes and do a force reboot.
8. After the reboot, you'll see some 32-bit colours and high resolution.

After all of this, the VM is completely set up. At least for me.
