I've used the proper bios date and chose the key to install the professional version. I've given the machine the proper amount of RAM and hard drive space, but after the frist phase of setup, my VM freezes. What am I doing wrong?

What are you installing this build in? Where did you get the ISO from?

My question for you is, what vm software are you using? What specs did you assign it other than ram and disk space? And define freezes. A screenshot and better description of events.
Sounds like you set the vm to vista specs, which in turn emulates a sata controller for the hard disk. These old pre beta 2 builds don't have good sata compatibility.

I'm installing from VM VirtualBox. I got the iso from Web Archive.

By freezes, I mean, the mouse won't be able to move.

Use VMware instead, and set the VM to VMware 5.x compability mode.

There probably a reason OP can't use vmware. I'll see if I can find the free vmware player that was equivalent to 7.x in terms of compatibility. That should work.

Try using the following config when installing 52xx in VirtualBox (thanks to BF10):
* Windows XP as guest OS
* IDE hard drive and CD drive
* No hardware acceleration (VT-x/AMD-V)
* Single processor
This config should hopefully not stall during install.

It would be also advised to disable paravirtualization.
