ResHack issue in Windows 7

Post by OdysseyNeptune »

Ok. I had modified the text in winver using reshack, however, it doesn't let me replace the original with this winver, even though i am an Administrator. Do i need the TrustedInstaller account or something?

Change ownership and permissions temporarily from TrustedInstaller to Administrators or your User and try again. Then, revert back to original permissions. You can use another system file like cmd.exe as a reference to make sure that it's correct.

I actually gained ownership of the entire Windows directory and subdirectories, using the Command Prompt.

You could just edit it in the file properties of winver under the security tab.

Could you provide a screenshot? And please don't double post. If needed, edit your most recent post if you were the previous member to post something.

Well this is my 100th post, though I was hoping to reach this milestone much sooner. :P

That's your problem. You should not rename the files. Instead, boot into a Windows 7 install media, open cmd and type in notepad.exe. Then click open files and that's where you should replace the original file with the one you modified. Of course, make sure that you have permissions set so that you could delete the original in Windows PE.

It doesn't have to be Windows 7 either. Heck, you can use a Windows 10 iso using the Media Creation Tool. Try doing that.

Make a USB using the Media Creation Tool.

Simply put your modified Winver.exe on the root of the USB.

And then boot into the USB and copy the modified Winver.exe and paste it into System32.

or just copy lower txt into a reg file
it lets you right click any file to Take Ownership of that file or file system.
it also adds it to right click as well
or just get it off my mega

Are you trying to save directly into system32 folder?
If you use 32-bit program to save file into system32 on 64-bit Windows, it will be redirected into SysWow64 32-bit wersion of system32.
