A friend of mine sent me a screenshot. He said it was from a beta, but didn't specify anything.
Is it from a 95/98/ME beta, or a new (possibly planned) 9x OS?
Here is the screenshot:
Possible Windows 95/98/ME beta or new 9x beta?

This just looks like a Windows 95 bootscreen with some text edited out.

If you share a link to the build itself we can check it out but I'm more than willing to guess it's just an edited Windows 95 boot screen.

Today he sent the build, but in the Start menu and everything it says Windows 95. Bummer.

At most, it might be a VERY EARLY Nashville or Memphis build, but most likely it's just an modified copy of Windows 95, with the 95 edited out and the gradient replaced with the 98 gradient.
Try to get the build number, both the one reported on System Properties and on the MS-DOS Prompt, but even if the build number is different, it could still be just a modified 95 copy.

Re: Possible Windows 95/98/ME beta or new 9x beta?
The screenshot is fabricated. Windows 9x stores the boot logo as a 320x400 bitmap, which gets stretched to 640x400 by the video adapter. It does that by duplicating the columns, which means that every two columns must be the same. If you open the image in Photoshop, you can see that this is true for most of the image - except for the part where the "95" numeral would normally be.
See this picture:
You can clearly see the stretch on the Windows word mark and in the clouds above it. It's pretty obvious that the "95" was edited out from an already stretched screenshot.

Oh. Winver reports 4.0.999. That's Nashville, correct?

No, the leaked Nashville build has version number 4.10.999
Also, that's in System Properties -- not winver

So... yeah, it was a very bad fake lol, probably made by someone who only knew that Nashville's build number was 999, but knew nothing else about it.
