(Solved) Longhorn Server build 4028

Post by Windows Thunderstruck »

I am trying to install Longhorn Server build 4028.

When I use the normal ISO in VMware and Virtual PC, it gets stuck at "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..."

Trying again with an edited ISO I made (to use 4029's setup (but with 4028 install.wim), The results are: Setup goes smoothly until the end of the file copying phase, reboots normally, then black screen in both VMWare and VPC.

As this is a Longhorn build, I do not want to use PCem or 86box, because it would be insanely slow on a LH build, in other words slower than 4015 and 4039.

I have seen posts on here and they have got this build working on VMware and possibly VPC as well, so this build is defiently possible to install.

Already did select disk 0 on the 4029 PE, still black screen at the end.

Update: Peformed a diskpart on the 4029 PE, but this time stuck on gray bar at the bottom.

Another update: Even tried to do it as a dual boot of Windows 2003 RTM and LH 4028, gets stuck at please wait.

Found a way to successfuly install this build.

Step 1: Use an ISO editor to replace 4028's BOOT folder with 4029's.
Step 2: Use a Windows XP or Server 2003 ISO (service packs don't matter) and go to the partitioning screen so you can create partitions for both 4028 and 4029.
Step 3: Install 4028 first then 4029 on the other partition.
Step 4: After installing 4029, the boot menu will appear. Choose the bottom "Microsoft Windows Longhorn", the top one is 4029.
Step 5: During the "Starting Setup... one moment please" part, you will get "At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details." Click OK and wait until there's no disk activity, then restart.
Step 6: Have fun with this build!
