If you using MS-DOS 6.xx, you get BSOD in Windows 1.01. Please use MS-DOS 3.xx-5.x for Windows 1.01. Also you can enable PS/2 Mouse driver. But if you using Windows 1.02 with EGA 64K Color, you hasn't get color. Only Windows 1.01's EGA 64K have color for MS-DOS 5.x. MS-DOS 5.00 is usable for VMWare and Virtualbox.

Nobody ever said it wouldn't run. Thing is that it was released in June 1991, when Windows 3.0 was on the shelves for a year already and Windows 3.1 was well on its way, so why would anybody even run Windows 1.0 on MS-DOS 5 back then?

You can use setver to get windows 1.01 run with MS-DOS 5.00. You can use Setver on Windows 1.0 Beta and Windows 1.0 Premiere Edition to run MS-DOS 5.00 and MS-DOS 6.XX. I used Setver get older windows 1.xx and 2.xx to run on MS-DOS 5.XX and 6.XX.
