Hi all,
I really want to install and try out Windows Chicago build 58s, but I don't know how exactly to do it properly. When trying to do it in VirtualBox (common error, I now know) I kept getting a blinking cursor after the boot screen showed up. A few posts on here said to do it in PCem, but it seems to be way too slow for my liking.
So, my question is, how have you guys successfully installed this build in the past, and what emulator and configuration has yielded the best results?
Best way to install build 58s?

Just use 86Box and set it to emulate a machine of its time (roughly like a 486DX).

Update: got it working in PCem

Why ask for advice if you're going to ignore it then?

The best way to install Chicago 58s is a older machine with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. First Install MS-Dos 6.22, Second Install Windows 3.1, and then upgrade to Chicago 58s

No need for an older machine when 86Box emulates an old machine .seth1999 wrote:The best way to install Chicago 58s is a older machine with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. First Install MS-Dos 6.22, Second Install Windows 3.1, and then upgrade to Chicago 58s
And the upgrade from Windows 3.1 is not needed at all, just run setup using dossetup.bat directly from DOS.

I'm pretty sure dos 7 is better to install Chicagoseth1999 wrote:The best way to install Chicago 58s is a older machine with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. First Install MS-Dos 6.22, Second Install Windows 3.1, and then upgrade to Chicago 58s
Re: Best way to install build 58s?
It doesn't matter really since Chicago has its own DOS 7 it runs on top of. You don't even need to have DOS installed from what I remember, a boot disk to prepare the hard drive etc. is sufficient. So in that regard, DOS 6.x vs 7 is a pointless argument.

I actually have installed this with a Win95 boot floppy and installing 6.22 and both of them work the same installing 58s. I prefer installing 6.22, but do whatever you like.

I could all install Win9x builds with VPC 2007 and DOS 6.22. If you're scared, use a lower PC with VPC 2004. (for example, Memphis build 1351)
