ask about installing Windows 2000 on old laptops

Post by liliwinnt6 »

gotta install Windows 2000 on a T or R series thinkpad, now the question is:
does intel have Windows 2000 drivers for GMA 950? (urgent)
does GMA 950 support Windows Aero effect of Windows 7? (not important)
what is the "newest" model of T, R or X series of thinkpad that has the complete suite of drivers for Windows 2000?
what is the "newest" display adapter for Windows 2000? both intel and nvidia (just give me the nvidia driver version number)

****** something else ******

is the pentium 2 or 3 platform could run Windows NT 5.0 beta from the first build to the build 1946 without manually install any driver?
installing beta 3 build 1946 on T60 or R60, could there be any problems? can I use Windows 2000 drivers or NT 4.0 drivers?
now the display card would be intel extreme graphics gen.1, network interface would be RTL8139 or intel pro/100 m, anything else could be integrated on board

thank you sincerely for your answers!

Here are my answers to your questions regarding Windows 2000 on laptops:

1. Yes, Official Windows 2000 drivers are available for the Intel GMA 950 GPUs, as pulled up from a quick google search (link).

2. I believe so, I've gotten Aero to work with Windows 7 on two computers (a Dell Optiplex GX520 and a Toshiba Satellite A105) with a GMA 950 GPU. Windows 7 includes WDDM drivers for the GMA 950.

3. As referenced from an older post regarding this question, the newest Thinkpads to have Windows 2000 drivers are the T60, R60, and X60. Although IIRC only the models with Intel GPUs had Windows 2000 graphics drivers available (at least from Lenovo's website)

4. IDK for certain what Intel GPU was the last to have Windows 2000 drivers, I've heard of someone who managed to get the Windows XP (32-bit) drivers for the GMA 4500 to work on 2000, but since I've never tried it myself, I don't really know how stable it would be. Off hand, I think Forceware 169.28 is the latest nVidia driver to work on Windows 2000. For more details on latest Windows 2000 drivers for nVidia video cards, take a look at this thread from another forum.

FWIW, Intel chipsets are usually universal when it comes to integrated devices (such as video, NIC, and audio), so for example, one motherboard with an i845 chipset can have the same integrated device combo as plenty of other boards with the i845 chipset. Most Intel motherboards used Analog Devices audio codecs and Intel NIC chips, drivers for both those devices can be found on either Intel's website or your OEM's driver page.

So it would not hurt to try installing NT 5.0 beta on the model _60s of ThinkPad?

damn, the Windows 2000 setup program would not continue

drive C: FAT 2GB partition, marked as active

method 1:
after the phase 1 copying all the needed files onto the hdd (under both DOS and Windows PE) and reboot, there is a cursor blinking on the high left corner of the screen, and the setup won't continue.

dos means properly installed MS-DOS 6.22, i can't use a floppy disk on it, and the laptop won't boot from usb flash disk
i installed DOS in the VMWare, mounting the physical drive for the install

method 2:
boot from Windows 2000 installation disc, directly do the phase 2 and then reboot, stuck before phase 3, blinking cursor again.

SSD: SanDisk SDSSDA120G
HDD: Seagate Momentus Thin ST500LT012
both ssd and hdd share the same symptom.

however, the Windows XP installation would like to continue to the phase 3

BIOS settings:
multi-processing options disabled
ahci disabled
all security options disabled

what now?

Sounds like something skewed with the boot. Ntldr, ntdetect, or the drive bootcode didn't come in right.
Try to reformat the drive with fat32 or ntfs without using dos.

new problem
the system would not detect NTLDR on the hdd, whenever the os is partially installed or not, it just says NTLDR is missing, but if i mount the hdd or ssd into vmware workstation as a physical disk, it boots properly.

do i need to try swap for another laptop with the dealer?
